Study Psychology in Germany: No GPA Cut-Off, from 199 €/Month

Over 60 programmes at over 25 private universities – bachelor, master, distance learning and full-time compared
 · Last updated 26.02.2026

At most German public universities the NC (Numerus Clausus) for psychology sits at 1.0 – roughly equivalent to a 4.0 GPA (US) or straight-A grades (UK).

Private universities offer an alternative: over 60 psychology programmes, all without a GPA cut-off, nearly half of them available as distance learning. Tuition starts at just 199 €/month – a fraction of what psychology degrees cost in the US (~$30,000/year) or the UK (~£9,250/year).

Important: The vast majority of programmes are taught in German. Only a handful are available in English (e.g. Touro Berlin, Constructor University). This page compares costs, admission requirements, salaries and the best study cities.

Financing: BAföG, scholarships, student loans

BAföG (Germany’s public student financial aid) is available to EU/EEA citizens and certain residence-permit holders studying at private universities. Non-EU students are generally not eligible for BAföG, but many universities offer their own scholarships or financing models – IU International University regularly awards merit scholarships, and Witten/Herdecke University runs an “inverse generational contract” where graduates pay back tuition after landing a job. KfW student loans (up to 650 €/month) are available to students under 45 – including some international students with a permanent residence permit.

Is distance learning a good option for studying psychology?

Yes – and it is increasingly popular. Nearly half of all psychology programmes at private universities in Germany are offered as distance learning, a share that is unusually high compared to other disciplines. Statistics, research methods, social psychology and developmental psychology can all be taught effectively in a digital format, often at lower tuition fees than campus programmes.

The biggest advantage: flexibility and cost. Distance learners save on tuition (from 177 €/month vs. 585 €/month for full-time) as well as relocation and living costs – and can work alongside their studies. IU International University, Euro-FH Hamburg and SRH Distance University are among the largest providers.

Important for the path to psychotherapy: If you plan to work as a licensed psychotherapist in Germany, you need an approbation-conforming bachelor under the Approbationsordnung (PsychThApprO), Germany’s national licensing regulation for psychotherapists. This bachelor requires clinical practice components (BQT I) that must be completed in person – currently, no German distance-learning provider offers an approbation-conforming B.Sc. in Psychology. For the psychotherapy pathway, a full-time campus bachelor is therefore required. The distance-learning B.Sc. does, however, qualify for other psychology master tracks (e.g. business psychology, health psychology). More details: Psychotherapy at private universities.

Note on language: Distance-learning programmes in psychology are almost exclusively taught in German. A strong command of German (typically B2/C1 level) is required. If you are still learning German, consider starting with a language preparation course while working part-time.

What are the admission requirements for psychology at a private university?

None of the private universities featured here apply a Numerus Clausus (NC). This is the most significant difference to public universities, where psychology has been one of the most competitive subjects for years. For international applicants: the German grading scale runs from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (pass) – an NC of 1.0 corresponds roughly to a 4.0 GPA (US), AAA at A-level (UK), or 45 IB points:

Public universityNC (WS 2024/25)
FU Berlin 1.0
LMU Munich 1.0
University of Cologne 1.0
University of Bonn 1.0
Ruhr University Bochum 1.0
University of Hamburg 1.4
TU Darmstadt 1.5
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg 1.6
All private universities: no GPA cut-off

For German school leavers

Applicants need a university entrance qualification – the Abitur (German secondary school diploma) or Fachabitur (university of applied sciences entrance qualification). Many private universities also admit students without Abitur, for example with completed vocational training plus work experience.

For international applicants

Your secondary school diploma must be recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. You can check whether your qualification is accepted using the anabin database (maintained by the KMK) or by contacting the university’s international admissions office. Qualifications commonly accepted include the International Baccalaureate (IB), British A-levels, the US high school diploma with AP exams or SAT/ACT, and the Indian 12th Standard. If your qualification is not directly recognised, a one-year Studienkolleg (foundation year) can bridge the gap.

Language requirements: Since nearly all psychology programmes are taught in German, applicants typically need a DSH-2, TestDaF 4 or equivalent certificate (roughly C1 level). For the few English-taught programmes (Touro Berlin, Constructor University), IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80+ is usually required instead.

Where to study Psychology? The best cities

The highest concentration of private universities offering psychology programmes is in Berlin, with over 10 institutions running full-time programmes. Major providers like Hochschule Fresenius, SRH and Macromedia operate across multiple cities. Those seeking a quieter environment will find university towns like Heidelberg, Göttingen or Potsdam offer a more focused study atmosphere. For distance learners, location is largely irrelevant – exams can often be taken online or at rotating test centres.

Additional full-time locations: Bremen (Constructor), Neuruppin (MHB), Regensburg (HSD Döpfer), Bielefeld & Hanover (FHM), Freiburg (Macromedia), Dresden & Hamm (SRH), Iserlohn (UE). Distance-learning providers such as IU, SRH Distance University, AKAD, DIPLOMA or PFH are location-independent and therefore not included.

How much do psychologists earn in Germany?

With a master’s degree, psychologists in the German public sector earn around 4,750 € gross per month at entry level. German public-sector salaries are set by collective agreements called TVöD (federal/municipal) and TV-L (state), with pay grades ranging from E9 (bachelor-level) to E15 (senior management). These figures are gross – after taxes and social contributions, roughly 60–65% remains as net income:

Degree / PositionEntry salary (gross/month)With experience
B.Sc. Psychology (TVöD E9) ~3,400 € ~4,100 €
M.Sc. Psychology (TVöD E13) ~4,750 € ~5,500 €
Licensed psychotherapist (TV-L E14) ~5,000 € ~6,200 €
Management position (TVöD E15Ü) up to ~8,800 €

In the private sector, entry-level salaries for bachelor graduates range from 3,100 to 3,600 €, for master graduates from 4,200 to 4,800 €. Business psychologists in corporations and consulting firms often earn higher salaries than clinically focused colleagues. For comparison: German psychologist salaries are broadly comparable to the UK (NHS Band 6–8) and lower than the US ($50k–$90k), but the significantly lower cost of studying in Germany means graduates start their careers with little or no student debt.

Career fields for psychologists

  • Clinical psychology: hospitals, counselling centres, rehabilitation facilities (master + approbation required)
  • Business psychology: recruitment, organisational development, coaching, market research
  • Educational psychology: school psychology, learning support, educational institutions
  • Health psychology: prevention, occupational health management, health insurance companies
  • Forensic psychology: expert opinions, forensics, correctional services
  • Research: universities, research institutes, pharmaceutical industry

Frequently asked questions about studying Psychology

At private universities, a university entrance qualification equivalent to the German Abitur is required – there is no GPA cut-off. Accepted international qualifications include the IB Diploma, British A-levels, US high school diploma with AP/SAT, and many others (check the anabin database for your country). Since most programmes are taught in German, you also need a German language certificate (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, i.e. C1 level). Non-EU students additionally need a student visa.

Only very few programmes are taught entirely in English: Touro University Berlin (Psychology, B.A.) and Constructor University Bremen (Integrated Social and Cognitive Psychology, B.Sc.). A small number of programmes at IU and UE are bilingual (German/English). The vast majority of psychology programmes require fluent German (C1 level). If you do not yet speak German, consider a preparatory language course first.

At German public universities, the NC typically ranges from 1.0 to 1.6 – a 1.0 on the German scale corresponds roughly to a 4.0 GPA (US), AAA at A-level (UK) or 45 IB points. At all private universities in Germany, psychology is available without any GPA requirement. Admission is based on an institutional selection process.

Distance-learning fees start from 177 €/month (DIPLOMA University, B.Sc.), full-time from 585 €/month (IB University). The lowest total cost for a bachelor is 7,164 € (SRH Distance University, 6 semesters). For comparison: a psychology degree in the US costs ,000+/year, in the UK around £9,250/year. Even the most expensive German private university is significantly cheaper than comparable programmes in English-speaking countries.

EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa. Non-EU citizens need a student visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zu Studienzwecken), which requires proof of admission, health insurance and a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with at least 11,904 €/year (~992 €/month) for living expenses. The visa also permits working up to 120 full days or 240 half days per year.

Beyond tuition, plan for approximately 900–1,100 €/month for rent, food, health insurance and transport. Berlin and Munich are the most expensive cities; smaller university towns like Göttingen, Potsdam or Witten are significantly cheaper. Mandatory health insurance costs around 110 €/month for students under 30.

Yes. Nearly half of all psychology programmes at German private universities are available as distance learning. Important limitation: Currently, no German distance-learning provider offers an approbation-conforming B.Sc. that meets the PsychThApprO requirements for the psychotherapy pathway. If you want to become a licensed psychotherapist, you must complete the bachelor on campus. For all other psychology careers (business, health, education, forensics), the distance-learning B.Sc. is fully recognised.

Psychology is the science of human experience and behaviour – with career paths in business, education, research, health and forensics. Psychotherapy is a specific career path within psychology: treating patients requires an additional Approbation (state licence) as a psychotherapist on top of the master degree.

In the public sector (TVöD/TV-L pay scales), the entry salary with a master degree is ~4,750 €/month gross. In the private sector, 4,200–4,800 € is typical. Licensed psychotherapists earn ~5,000 €+ (TV-L E14). Management positions can reach up to 8,800 €/month. After taxes and social contributions, roughly 60–65% remains as net income.

Yes – both within Germany and internationally. All universities listed here are state-recognised and their programmes are accredited by German accreditation agencies (e.g. FIBAA, ACQUIN). Bachelor and master degrees from private universities are legally equivalent to degrees from public universities. For recognition in other countries, check with your national credentials evaluation service (e.g. WES for North America, UK ENIC for the UK).

No – not via the current pathway under the PsychThApprO. Germany’s psychotherapy licensing regulation requires clinical practice components (BQT I) already at bachelor level, which must be completed in person. Currently, no German distance-learning university offers an approbation-conforming B.Sc. in Psychology. To become a licensed psychotherapist, both the bachelor and the master must be completed full-time and on campus. More details: Psychotherapy at private universities. Note: the Approbation is a German licence – if you plan to practise outside Germany, check whether it is recognised in your target country.
