The RH Cologne – University of Applied Science (RH) is a state-recognised university of applied sciences (UAS) in private, non-profit sponsorship based in Cologne. The university is part of the Rhineland Education Foundation network and supports around 6000 students at four Cologne locations. More than 245 permanent professors and staff as well as 250 freelance teachers enable a solid and practice-oriented education.
The study programme at RH includes more than 30 bachelor's and master's degree courses in the fields of Engineering, Business, Psychology & Law, Media, Marketing & Innovation, and Health Economics & Health. The courses are offered in various formats such as full-time, part-time, and dual, providing students with a wide range of learning and development options. With a tradition of over 60 years, RH is one of the oldest universities of applied sciences in Germany.
Purpose, Vision, and Mission
RH Cologne – University of Applied Science was renamed in March 2024 as part of a comprehensive rebranding (formerly Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln) and received a new visual identity to underline the transformation into a modern university of applied sciences. The purpose "Because our students are the change the future needs" and the mission "Opportunities arise from education. And education from opportunities." form the foundation of the university's strategy. The vision "Discover your vocation. Shape our future!" reflects the aspiration to support students individually and practically on their academic and professional paths.
Research at RH
RH operates several research institutes that strengthen the practical relevance in studies and enrich the teaching offer through innovative projects. Examples include:
Institute of Tool and Production Engineering: Supports production technology through applied research and assists students in project and thesis work.
Fibre Optic Sensors: Develops a sensor system for simultaneous measurement of physical quantities like strain and temperature at different locations.
Electromobility: Researches battery technologies for electromobility within the 'eProduction' project, focusing on laser-assisted joining techniques.
Institute of Compliance and Corporate Governance: Supports companies and organizations in areas such as sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
European Institute for Experience and Management (METIS): A cooperation with FHWien der WKW for research in knowledge and experience management, particularly focusing on digital transformation.

Additional Qualifications
In addition to the degree programmes, students can acquire industry-specific additional qualifications, some of which are certified by industrial partners such as Cisco, EPLAN, and Apple. This offering expands students' professional opportunities and prepares them specifically for the requirements in the business sector.
Founding and Sponsorship
The university was founded in 1971, but its origin lies in the „Rheinischen Ingenieurschule für Bau- und Maschinenbauwesen Köln“ (RIBM), founded in 1958. The Rhineland Education Foundation is the sponsor of the university. The university is supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is listed as a state-recognized university.
