How much does a childhood education degree at a private university cost?
Tuition fees for childhood education programmes at private universities in Germany range from 207 € to 589 € per month. Total programme costs amount to roughly 7,000–21,000 €, depending on the university, duration and study format. Distance learning programmes tend to be significantly cheaper than on-campus options. Dual programmes are typically funded by the employer.
Bachelor: tuition comparison
The most affordable bachelor programmes start at 207 € per month (DIPLOMA University, 5 semesters). IU International University offers a distance learning programme at 259 € monthly. Campus-based degrees at Medical School Hamburg or Medical School Berlin cost 390 €. Compared to early childhood education degrees in the US ($30,000–$80,000 total) or the UK (£9,250/year), German private universities are highly competitive.
Master: tuition comparison
Master programmes are specialised: Fliedner University offers an online Master in "Culture – Education – Participation" for 386 € per month (4 semesters). The University of Social Work and Pedagogy runs a Master in Inclusive Education for 425 €.
| Course | University | Fees | |
|---|---|---|---|

| Inclusive education in elementary and primary settings, Master of Arts Part-time program | University of Social Work and Pedagogy | from 10200 € total from 425 € monthly |
Financing: scholarships, BAföG and employer funding
International students enrolled at state-recognised private universities may qualify for BAföG (German student aid, up to 992 €/month) if they hold a permanent residence permit or have lived in Germany for at least five years. Dual study programmes are typically fully funded by the Kita employer – you study and earn a salary simultaneously. The DAAD scholarship database lists additional options for international students.
What are the admission requirements for international students?
All childhood education programmes at private universities in Germany are open admission – there is no Numerus Clausus (NC). At public universities of education (Pädagogische Hochschulen), admission can be highly competitive, with NCs ranging from 2.1 to 3.8.
For a bachelor programme, you typically need a secondary school leaving certificate equivalent to the German Abitur. Your credentials must be recognised via the anabin database or a WES evaluation. Several universities also accept applicants with professional experience in early childhood education.
For a master programme, you need a first degree in childhood education, pedagogy, education sciences or a related field worth at least 180 ECTS credits.
Language requirements: All childhood education programmes in Germany are taught in German (B2–C1 level required). There are currently no fully English-taught Kindheitspädagogik programmes. Some universities offer individual English-language modules.
Childhood education degree vs. vocational training – what is the difference?
Germany has two pathways into early childhood education: the traditional vocational training as "Erzieher/in" (educator, 3–5 years at a Fachschule) and the academic route through a B.A. in Kindheitspädagogik. The key differences affect career options and salary.
| Criterion | Erzieher training (vocational) | B.A. Childhood Education |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | State-recognised Erzieher/in | Bachelor of Arts + state recognition as Kindheitspädagoge/in |
| Duration | 3–5 years (Fachschule) | 6–8 semesters (3–4 years) |
| TVöD entry | S 8a (3,509 €/month) | S 8b (3,579 €/month) |
| Career ceiling | Group leader – leadership requires additional training + years of experience | Direct access to Kita leadership (S 13–S 17), consulting, early intervention |
| Research skills | Limited | Research methods, evaluation, academic writing |
| Master access | Not directly possible | Yes – pathway to research, teaching, professorship |
The decisive advantage of the academic route is career mobility: with a B.A. in childhood education, you qualify directly for leadership positions (TVöD S 13–S 17), consulting roles and early intervention work. The salary difference of up to 640 € per month between S 8a and S 13 means that tuition costs of around 14,000 € pay for themselves within two years.
Career prospects and salary for childhood education graduates in Germany
Salaries in German early childhood education follow the TVöD SuE pay scale (effective May 2026):
| Pay grade | Typical position | Level 1 | Level 3 | Level 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S 8a | Erzieher/in (group leader) | 3,509 € | 3,977 € | 4,669 € |
| S 8b | Kindheitspädagoge/in (specialist) | 3,579 € | 4,092 € | 5,191 € |
| S 11b | Educational consultant | 3,915 € | 4,368 € | 5,441 € |
| S 13 | Daycare leadership (small) | 3,978 € | 4,617 € | 5,474 € |
| S 17 | Daycare leadership (large) | 4,352 € | 5,139 € | 6,382 € |
Career paths after a childhood education degree:
- Daycare leadership (Kita-Leitung): The most common career path – salaries range from TVöD S 13 to S 17 (up to 6,382 €/month gross).
- Educational consulting (Fachberatung): Advising Kita teams on pedagogical concepts and quality development.
- Early intervention (Frühförderung): Supporting children aged 0–6 with developmental delays – in early intervention centres or mobile services.
- Family counselling: Working with families on parenting challenges and child welfare.
- Quality management: Developing quality standards in early childhood settings – a growing field driven by the KiTa-Qualitätsgesetz.
Germany faces a shortage of approximately 114,000 qualified early childhood education professionals. Additionally, 430,000 daycare places are missing nationwide. Since August 2026, all primary school children have a legal right to all-day care – further increasing demand for qualified staff.
Study formats: distance learning, on-campus and dual
Childhood education at private universities is available in five formats: distance learning, on-campus, part-time, online and dual. Unlike many other fields, the distribution is relatively even – no single format dominates.
Distance learning
Distance learning programmes offer maximum flexibility. Providers include IU International University (259 €/month), DIPLOMA University (from 207 €), Fresenius University (215 €) and Euro-FH (289 €). This format is particularly suited for international students who want to start studying before relocating to Germany – though B2-level German is required.
On-campus programmes
Seven campus-based programmes are available in Berlin (University of Social Work and Pedagogy, Medical School Berlin), Hamburg (Medical School Hamburg), Düsseldorf (Fliedner University), Alfter near Bonn (Alanus University), Gera (SRH University) and Leipzig. Tuition ranges from 215 to 438 € monthly.
Dual programmes
The dual format combines academic study with practical training at a Kita. IU International University offers dual childhood education programmes at locations across Germany. The Kita employer typically covers all tuition costs and pays a monthly salary during the practical phases.
Practical information for international students
- Language: All childhood education programmes are taught in German (B2–C1 required). Germany is the birthplace of kindergarten (Friedrich Fröbel, 1837) – and the academic tradition continues in German.
- Student visa: Non-EU citizens need a student visa. You must demonstrate sufficient funds – currently around 11,904 € per year in a blocked account (Sperrkonto).
- ECTS credit system: All programmes use the European Credit Transfer System. A bachelor requires 180 ECTS (6 semesters), a master 90–120 ECTS. Credits transfer internationally.
- Credential recognition: Check whether your school-leaving certificate is recognised via anabin.kmk.org.
- State recognition: The "staatliche Anerkennung als Kindheitspädagogin/Kindheitspädagoge" is a professional qualification regulated at state level. It is required for employment as a pedagogical specialist in German daycare centres.
- Job market: Germany faces a shortage of 114,000 early childhood professionals. Graduates with a B.A. in Kindheitspädagogik and German language skills have excellent employment prospects.
