What is a Fachhochschule?

Most private institutions in Hesse are Fachhochschulen (universities of applied sciences). Their degrees are fully equivalent to university degrees under the Bologna system. EBS University is the exception: it holds full university status and offers a law degree with state examination (Staatsexamen) – one of only a few private universities in Germany to do so. All private institutions are state-recognised – their degrees carry the same legal weight as those from Goethe University Frankfurt or TU Darmstadt.
