Admission requirements
For admission to the Master's programme in Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, the following admission requirements apply:
- Eligibility to study in Master's programmes according to § 39 HmbHG
- Successfully completed Bachelor's degree in Psychology (usually with an overall grade of at least 2.5)

The Master's degree programme in Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy integrates clinical-psychological as well as psychotherapeutic, scientific and management-related content. In recent years, mental illnesses have increased significantly, among other things due to changing demands in the world of work. The aim of the study programme is to enable students, upon successful completion, to possess the best possible competencies for one of the practical fields of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy.
The focus of the degree programme, which is offered at the Faculty of Human Sciences (University), lies in the knowledge as well as the practical application and testing of clinical interventions (e.g. psychological counselling in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, medical care centres, counselling centres and especially psychotherapy).

In order to work as a psychotherapist, a training period of at least three years is necessary after the Master's degree. The special feature at MSH: Together with the qualification of the Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology at the Faculty of Human Sciences at MSH, you meet the current and future minimum requirements for admission to psychotherapy training upon successful completion of the Master's degree programme in Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, subject to recognition by the responsible state authority.
After successful completion of the Master's degree and fulfilment of the requirements, you have the opportunity to continue your training as a Psychological Psychotherapist at the HIP Hafencity Institute for Psychotherapy at MSH. We currently offer training in the specialised procedures of behavioural therapy and depth-psychologically based psychotherapy as well as expertise in analytical psychotherapy.
As a licensed psychotherapist you can apply for approval from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians and open your own practice as well as take on management roles in institutions such as clinics or counselling centres.
The Master's degree programme is officially recognised and professionally accredited.
