The Macromedia University is a private, state-recognized university located in Stuttgart. It was founded in 2006 and has been part of the international education group Galileo Global Education based in Paris since 2013. The institution is operated by Macromedia GmbH, whose roots date back to 1993. The university is part of a network of over 50 educational institutions worldwide.
Macromedia University operates eight campuses in Germany: Stuttgart, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig, Frankfurt, and Freiburg. In addition, there are additional study centres in Hanover and Dusseldorf for the hybrid study model "Macromedia Studium Plus". The university structure is divided into two faculties: the Faculty of "Culture, Media, and Psychology" and the Faculty of "Business, Design, and Technology."
The range of study programs includes over 15 accredited bachelor's and master's programs with nearly 50 specializations. These cover a wide range of subjects: management, media and communication sciences, journalism, film, acting, music, game design, fashion, design, psychology, sports, and nutrition. The programs are offered in both German and English and are modular in structure.
Applicants for the bachelor's program need a general higher education entrance qualification or a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. Alternatively, admission is possible with a completed vocational training and two years of professional experience, partly supplemented by an aptitude test. For English-language programs, a language proficiency certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS is required. For master's programs, a first university degree with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits and a personal interview are necessary.
Tuition fees start at a minimum of £779 per month depending on the location. Several payment models are available: monthly, per semester, or as a discounted lump sum.
Campus life is characterized by small study groups, close supervision by lecturers, modern learning environments, and an international atmosphere. All campuses have their libraries, VR labs, studios, and design workshops. In addition, numerous advisory and support services are available, including the Career Service and the International Office.
A central element of the study programs is the didactic concept "mPower". It combines traditional face-to-face teaching with digital and hybrid teaching formats and focuses on Future Skills such as problem-solving skills, teamwork, self-management, and digital competence. This concept is complemented by practical teaching sessions in which students collaborate with real business partners.
Another characteristic is the strong international focus: The 7-semester bachelor's program includes a mandatory semester abroad, which is completed at one of around 30 partner universities on five continents. These partnerships ensure full recognition of the academic achievements. For master's students, the university offers optional Study Weeks at partner universities in London, Paris, and New York.
Entrepreneurship promotion is also emphasized: The "Entrepreneurship" module is an integral part of the curricula. The university operates a "Virtual Start-up Incubator" and regularly holds the Macromedia Start-up Contest. Successful graduates have founded numerous start-ups in areas such as media, games, and VR/AR.
Research and academic work are integral parts of the academic orientation. The university conducts applied research in the clusters of "Media and Communication Innovation," "Business Transformation," "Brand Management & Design," and "Sports and Media." It sees itself as a driver at the interface between science and practice. Additionally, it is a member of numerous national and international associations, such as CILECT, emma, EUPRERA, the Art Directors Club, and the MedienCampus Bayern.
The university pursues a consistent sustainability strategy, which is reflected in the areas of gender, diversity, and environmental management. It has established a Gender & Diversity Commission and aligns itself with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Since 2022, it has been holding the annual Macromedia Sustainability Week at all campus locations.
Macromedia University is institutionally accredited by the German Accreditation Council and holds the FIBAA quality seal for "Excellence in Digital Education." It has been reinspected institutionally by the German Council of Science.
