The Psychological University Berlin (PHB) is a private, state-recognised university that was founded in 2010 by the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP). The university is centrally located in the "House of Psychology" at Köllnischen Park in Berlin-Mitte. The university was recognised by the Berlin Senate on 5th May 2010 and received institutional accreditation from the Science Council in January 2018.
The PHB offers a specialised range of studies in the field of psychology and psychotherapy. The versatile Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology (B.Sc.) forms the basis for a career in psychology and meets the requirements of the reformed Psychotherapists Act. In the Master's area, there are courses such as "Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy," "Health in Work and Society," and "Forensic Psychology" to choose from. Some programmes are designed for part-time study.
In the postgraduate area, the PHB offers Master's programmes with training in behavioural therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and systemic therapy. These are aimed at graduates with a diploma or Master's degree in Psychology. Selection of students is based on personal interviews; a numerus clausus is not applied.
The university follows the Scientist-Practitioner model: instructors are active in both research and psychotherapeutic practice. Research focuses include psychotherapy research, work and health psychology, diagnostics and personality, as well as forensic psychological assessment.
A central element of the PHB is the university outpatient clinic, where psychotherapeutic treatments in behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and systemic therapy are offered. Here, approved therapists as well as therapists in training work, creating a close connection between teaching, research, and practice. Additionally, since January 2025, PHB has had an EEG laboratory to support teaching and research.
A special offering is the "steps" project, which provides psychological counselling for refugees and at the same time enables students to gain practical experience and further education in the transcultural field.
With small, family-like year groups and individual support, PHB offers a personal study atmosphere. It is organised as a non-profit, so all revenues flow into the development of the university and the education of students. The tuition fees are fairly structured, providing financial predictability.
In the winter semester of 2024/2025, PHB has 747 students. It is committed to university standards and is closely connected to psychological professional associations such as the BDP and further education institutions such as the German Psychologists Academy.
