Inhalt

In an increasingly digitalised world, business informatics is becoming more and more important as a subject. Companies are increasingly relying on innovative technologies to optimise their business processes and achieve competitive advantages.

The increasing demand for professionals with sound knowledge in both fields - business and computer science - has led to a wide range of degree programmes.

Bachelor's and Master's degrees in business informatics are also among the most popular courses at German private universities. Corresponding degree programmes are offered at numerous universities from Hamburg to Munich, both as classic face-to-face degree programmes, as dual degree programmes and distance learning programmes, and as part-time degree programmes.

Here I present all the degree programmes in business informatics as well as all the universities with business informatics degree programmes and give an outlook on the career opportunities with this degree programme and how they differ from pure computer science.

Dual degree programme in business informatics: all degree programmes at private universities

The dual study programme is becoming increasingly popular, and not only among students, who benefit from the additional  practical experience and contacts in the working world: Companies can also adapt the practical activities and training objectives to their needs and thus take on an academic employee without a learning phase.

A dual study programme thus combines academic training at a university with practical work in a company. The students alternate between theory phases at the university and practical phases in the company.

As a rule, the company providing the training pays the tuition fees and also remunerates the students for their practical work. This also puts the usually higher tuition fees at private universities into perspective.

Career prospects: What do you do with a business information systems degree?

The advancing digitisation and use of technology in businesses is creating a huge demand for business information systems experts. Companies need professionals who can bridge the gap between IT and business operations to create optimal solutions.

The growing interest in data-driven decision-making, e-commerce and cybersecurity is creating a constant demand for graduates with strong business information technology skills.

Typically, business information systems graduates have the following roles after graduation:

IT consultant: As an IT consultant, you analyse and optimise companies' IT infrastructure to make their business processes more efficient. The demand for IT consultants is increasing as companies are increasingly looking for individual IT solutions to stay competitive.

IT Manager: In this role, you will develop and implement IT strategies to ensure that a company's IT systems meet business needs. As technology is a driving force for business growth, the need for skilled IT managers is high.

Software developers: Software developers create, test and implement customised software solutions for businesses. The demand for qualified developers is strong as companies need innovative applications to automate and improve their processes.

These activities can be associated with different tasks and objectives, e.g.

E-business and e-commerce: Designing and optimising online platforms to develop digital business models and increase online sales.

Big Data and Business Intelligence: Analysing big data to gain insights for better business decisions and competitive advantage.

Cybersecurity: Protecting IT infrastructure from cyber-attacks, with increasing connectivity and digitisation driving the need for security experts.

Which is better Business Information Technology or Computer Science?

In the field of information technology, two related but distinct fields of study come to the fore: business information systems and computer science. Both courses offer promising career prospects, but they differ in the characteristics of their study contents and fields of activity.

While business informatics combines sound IT knowledge with an understanding of business administration, pure computer science focuses on technical aspects of information technology. Here, students deepen their knowledge of programming, algorithms, data structures and software development.

Business informatics graduates are therefore often seen as "translators" between IT and business processes, as they are trained to develop and implement IT solutions to increase the efficiency of companies. Computer scientists, on the other hand, are mainly specialised in technological innovations and software development.

Business informatics is therefore better for all those who want to combine information technology with business processes and economic aspects. Pure Informatics is suitable when technology and development should be the focus of education and career.
