The Wilhelm Büchner University (WBH) is a state-recognized private university of Applied Sciences located in Darmstadt, Hesse. It was founded in 1997 and has been named after the scientist Wilhelm Büchner since 2008. The university is part of the German Continuing Education Society and belongs to the Klett Group, one of the leading educational providers in Europe.

With over 4,300 students (as of the winter semester 2024/25), it is the largest private university for technology and design in Germany. The university is administratively and academically led by the presidency, supported by an extended presidency, senate, and university council. The university is divided into the departments of Computer Science, Engineering, Energy, Environment, and Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Technology Management, as well as Design.

WBH offers a comprehensive range of study programs including bachelor's, master's, and MBA programs, university certificates, as well as Nano Degrees. The study formats - distance learning, flexible study, and online evening study - are particularly tailored to professionals and are characterized by high flexibility. All degree programs are state-recognized, accredited by ACQUIN and ZEvA, and approved by the Central Office for Distance Learning (ZFU).

The study combines self-study with multimedia online elements and supervised face-to-face phases. A digital campus with AI learning support, instructional videos, webinars, and e-books is available 24/7. Research-based learning is promoted through interactive formats such as innovation labs, project seminars, and academic papers.

Quality Assurance and Accreditations

Wilhelm Büchner University was granted unlimited state recognition in 2008 and institutionally accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities in 2016. In 2024, it received system accreditation from the Accreditation Council, allowing the university to accredit its own study programs.

The underlying quality management system ensures the continuous development of teaching, study, and service offerings. The programs were previously audited by renowned agencies such as ACQUIN and ZEvA as part of program accreditations.

Research and Partnerships

WBH's research is application-oriented and interdisciplinary. Key research areas include computer science, engineering, energy economics, technology management, as well as distance learning and continuing education methodology.

The Wilhelm Büchner Institute for Applied Research and Design (IFG), a non-profit research institute, coordinates research activities and promotes cooperation with industry and academia. International collaborations exist with universities in Spain, the USA, and within Germany. The university is also a member of numerous sustainability and science networks.

History and Namesake

The university was founded in 1997 as the Private Distance University Darmstadt. The first study program was a diploma course in computer science. Since 2008, it has been named after Wilhelm Büchner (1816–1892), an entrepreneur and educational pioneer from Pfungstadt, known for chemical innovations and the establishment of educational institutions. Since then, the study offerings have been continuously expanded, particularly in technical, design, and economic disciplines.
