The University of Social Work and Pedagogy (HSAP), formerly known as the "University of Applied Pedagogy," was founded in 2013 and began its study programme in 2014. It is a private, state-recognized university located in Berlin and is under the auspices of the University of Applied Pedagogy - non-profit operating company mbH. The sole shareholder is the Technical Youth Recreation and Education Society (tjfbg) gGmbH, which is active in the field of child and youth welfare.
With around 544 students (as of the winter semester 2024/2025), HSAP offers practice-oriented degree programmes in the fields of social work, early childhood education, special needs education, and school social work. The degree programmes are either dual, part-time, or integrated into the profession, facilitating a close integration of theory and practice. In cooperation with the Paritätische Akademie Berlin, in particular, the part-time bachelor's degree programmes in special needs education and social work are conducted. In addition to consecutive master's degree programmes, HSAP's further education offerings include specialized continuing education and development courses with ECTS credits.
Teaching at HSAP takes place in small seminar groups of approximately 22 to 30 students, ensuring intensive supervision and practical training. Study formats include face-to-face events as well as a high proportion of online teaching and self-directed learning. This facilitates the compatibility of studies and work and aligns with HSAP's self-concept as a family-friendly university.
Research at HSAP focuses on socially relevant topics such as inclusion, participation, all-day school pedagogy, and community development. The university's own research institute for social work and pedagogy (FSAP) coordinates research activities. Students are systematically introduced to scientific work and can participate in ongoing projects.
To ensure quality, the university employs a comprehensive quality management system, which includes teaching evaluations, monitoring processes, and the involvement of all university members.
Starting from the winter semester 2024/25, teaching will take place at the new location in the Schuckert-Höfe in Berlin-Treptow. This location is wheelchair accessible and houses not only teaching rooms but also administration, library, counseling rooms, and student facilities. Additional seminar locations include Alt-Stralau and, during the summer months, the seminar ship on the Spree.
