The University of Applied Sciences of the Middle Class (FHM) is a private, state-recognised university based in Bielefeld. It was founded in 2000 by several trade organizations and is now part of the Education & Craft Foundation based in Paderborn. With currently around 5,700 students, over 250 staff members, more than 80 professors, and around 280 practical experts, FHM is one of the leading private universities in Germany, with a clear focus on medium-sized companies and crafts.
FHM's range of courses includes bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in the fields of business, psychology, pedagogy & social work, media & communication, technology, and sport & health. Teaching at FHM is based on a trimester-based tri-modal system. Full-time courses, part-time models, dual and trial programs as well as distance learning and virtual live study formats are offered. The latter enable location-independent and time-independent study, which is particularly aimed at working professionals.
The FHM study concept pursues a comprehensive educational goal: students should not only be professionally qualified but also be made personally and entrepreneurially capable. The basis for this is the specially developed competence model, which is divided into three areas: Professional Skills (professional competence), Management Skills (entrepreneurial thinking), and Smart Skills (personal development, communication, and teamwork). This concept is reflected in all study formats - whether in face-to-face teaching, online, or distance learning. Special emphasis is placed on practical relevance across formats: projects, excursions, practical phases, and lecturers with direct reference to professional practice ensure a solid preparation for the job market.
The part-time study programs at FHM offer high flexibility: lectures take place in the evenings and on weekends, ensuring compatibility between work, family, and study. With the so-called 'top-up' study program, FHM also offers an advanced study program that allows a reduction of the study duration by up to 50% through the recognition of training content. Furthermore, under certain conditions, it is also possible to study without a high school diploma.
FHM operates a total of nine campus locations in Bamberg, Berlin, Bielefeld, Düren, Frechen, Hanover, Cologne, Rostock, and Waldshut. In addition, the FHM Online University serves as a digital campus, offering students location-independent and time-independent study opportunities. All locations are characterized by central locations, good public transport connections, and a close-knit campus life with personal support.
The group structure of the study promotes exchange and networking among students. All courses are admission-free, and a fixed study schedule as well as a trimester-based time structure allow for clear planning. Through the TraiNex campus management system, students have access to all relevant information and study materials. Support is provided through a three-tiered concept including study counseling, study group support, and direct contact with lecturers.
An essential part of FHM is the practice-oriented research. The focus is on research on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a strong emphasis on practical needs. Currently, over 30 third-party funded projects with a total volume of over €15 million (2021-2024) are being implemented. The research is interdisciplinary and internationally networked, with focuses including sustainable urban development, education, and digitization. International partnerships, e.g. with the University of Worcester and the University of Gloucestershire, as well as programs for international students (e.g. through the DAMI Study College) and refugees (DAAD-funded since 2017), complete the offering.
FHM is institutionally accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities, system-accredited by FIBAA, and certified by Certqua for its further education offerings. All programs are accredited by FIBAA or AHPGS.
