Journalism Studies at Macromedia University

Whether offline or online – journalism is always about information, enlightenment, and shaping public opinion. However, with the changing media landscape, the profession of journalists has also evolved. Today, journalists increasingly become media creators themselves in a multidimensional media world. Accordingly, the journalistic tools of the past are no longer sufficient. Genuine quality journalism today demands more and is becoming increasingly challenging – whether for tabloid or political reporting.

The Journalism degree at Macromedia University (formerly MHMK) offers you a modern and broadly based journalistic academic programme with a variety of qualifications in the three fields of general journalism, political journalism, and sports journalism. In contrast to purely practical training at a journalism school, you will also acquire theoretical background knowledge with us and earn a full university degree in the field of journalism.

As a university, we deliberately focus on quality journalism and prepare you as best as possible for journalistic and editorial work in publishing across all media: TV and radio editorial teams as well as print, online, and cross-media editorial offices.

Additional professional fields for journalists include production companies, journalists’ offices, press agencies, corporate communications, or working as a freelancer. It is not uncommon for excellent career opportunities to arise already during your internship as part of your studies.

Macromedia University is not just a place to learn like any other journalism faculty. Practical exercises, intensive exchange with real industry professionals, and genuine teaching projects are as important to us as conveying theoretical foundations. That is what excites the students so much.

Course Structure

Over a total duration of seven semesters, the Journalism degree imparts you with solid specialist knowledge for various journalistic and editorial tasks.

In addition to basic theoretical knowledge, we place great emphasis on practical application. To this end, we maintain collaborations with a wide range of renowned and leading media outlets. This allows you to test your abilities under professional conditions even during your studies. And you can also focus on what matches your personal interests across the many teaching projects throughout all semesters.

The basic study programme is uniform for all students and gives you the opportunity to develop initial personal inclinations and pursue interests. To sharpen your profile, you can choose from four specialisations in the main study programme: general journalism, cultural journalism, political journalism, and sports journalism.

You will spend the third or fourth semester abroad. With economic globalisation, the importance of international expertise is also increasing in journalism. Our established network of renowned partner universities across all five continents offers you the chance to gain valuable experience and discover new cultures. You do not have to fear any loss of time in your studies. All universities teach according to the 6+1 programme of Macromedia University following our curricula and quality standards as well as maintaining close dialogue with us. And the best part: from the very first semester, you will be prepared for your stay abroad with modular English language courses.

In the main study programme, you will work within your field of study alongside students from other disciplines at the university. It is often here, in interdisciplinary collaboration, that exciting synergies arise for your personal and professional development.

The sixth semester is spent gaining practical experience. Whether domestically or abroad and with which employer you decide yourself. Of course, we remain in continuous contact with you during these five months.
