The MU Media University of Applied Sciences was founded in 2008 and is a private, state-recognised university of applied sciences with locations in Berlin, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main. It is institutionally accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities, and all current degree programmes are accredited by FIBAA or are undergoing the accreditation process.

The university offers practice-oriented Bachelor's and Master's programmes with a focus on media in the fields of design, journalism and communication, psychology, management, and humanities. The number of students in the winter semester 2024/25 was 1,783.

Among the Bachelor's programs offered is "Graphic Design and Visual Communication". The Master's offerings include programmes such as "Artificial Intelligence and Societies", "International Marketing and Media Management", "Communication Design and Creative Strategies", "Digital Journalism", "Public Relations and Digital Marketing", "Visual and Media Anthropology", and "Business Psychology".

MU places great importance on a close connection between theory and practice. Through real projects, case studies, and collaborations with companies like ZDF, SAP, Google, or META, students are optimally prepared for the professional world. This is complemented by project-based teaching formats such as the regular project week in Berlin.

Small study groups, individually supervised study paths, and interdisciplinary exchanges between departments promote academic success. The lecturers possess high professional and practical competence as well as close industry connections, which additionally facilitates entry into the workforce.

Internationalisation plays a central role: Since 2013, MU has been participating in the Erasmus+ programme and has once again been awarded the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education for the 2021-2027 programme generation. Students can spend one or two semesters at a European partner university or complete an internship abroad through Erasmus+. Furthermore, strategic partnerships with universities worldwide exist – including in Ireland, Mexico, China, India, Kazakhstan, and Australia.

In addition, the university participates in the PROMOS programme, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It enables students to realise stays abroad outside of Europe, including study semesters, internships, or language courses. Support is provided through partial scholarships, travel cost subsidies, or course fee subsidies – depending on the destination country and length of stay.

The MU International Office provides comprehensive support to students in organising their stays abroad – from selecting suitable programmes to application and financing. International students also receive support in integration, such as advice on visas, accommodation, and cultural activities.

MU actively promotes diversity, equality, and sustainability. The Green Office coordinates ESG measures for ecological sustainability, e.g. for CO2 reduction, circular economy, and sustainable mobility. Themes such as climate justice and environmental awareness are also addressed in projects and courses.

Another central component of the study concept is the Career Service, which supports students in internships, applications, and transitioning into the workforce – including advice on international internships and support through Erasmus+ and PROMOS.
