Admission requirements

Admission to the Social Work degree programme is granted to those who meet one of the following requirements:

• General university entrance qualification
• Advanced technical college entrance qualification
• Passed master craftsman examination
• Intermediate school leaving certificate (at least Realschulabschluss) and qualified completion of a recognised vocational training of at least 3 years, which shows an average/overall or final grade of 2.5 or better (if these grades are not shown, the arithmetic mean of the individual subject grades applies)
• Completion of a vocational advancement training of at least 400 teaching hours, a technical school or a vocational or administrative academy*
• Final examination in a state-recognised training occupation with subsequent professional activity of at least 2 years in a field related to the degree programme and passing a separate university entrance examination*

*in accordance with the regulation on the admission of professionally qualified persons to universities in the state of Hesse

Further information on specific qualifications will be gladly provided upon request. Applicants who do not meet the above requirements can initially participate in the course as guest auditors, provided admission to the HZB examination is granted.

For foreign qualifications, equivalence must be demonstrated for admission.

There is a great demand for qualified professionals in the social sector. The wide range of tasks includes the classic responsibilities in child and youth pedagogy, supporting individuals with addiction and those who are particularly psychologically burdened, as well as resolving intercultural conflicts. The (online) distance learning programme in Social Work prepares you comprehensively for your future role, both in theory and practice, as all content is delivered with a very strong practical focus.

The on-campus degree programme "Social Work" (B.A.) prepares you very thoroughly for this exciting and meaningful professional field. You acquire all the skills needed to professionally support people in their individual life situations, manage projects, and improve social coexistence. You will learn the theoretical and methodological foundations of social work and develop pedagogical, sociological, social-psychological, and medical competencies. Social work in the (inter)cultural context is also a relevant subject area in the course. Additionally, you acquire knowledge of the legal foundations of social work and sharpen your communication and presentation skills.

During your studies, you can also choose your personal, professionally oriented specialisation in order to further deepen your skills.

Specialisations in the Bachelor's degree programme in Social Work include:
• Social work with children and adolescents
• Psychosocial counselling and health
• Digitalisation (in) social work
• Social work across the life span (age)

Course progression
At DIPLOMA University of Applied Sciences, you have the option to study the Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Pedagogy in one of four formats: as an online course, as a local distance learning course, as an on-campus degree, or as a dual study programme.

The on-campus degree is available at our DIPLOMA University sites in Leipzig and Bad Sooden-Allendorf, and the standard duration is six semesters. In the traditional university of applied sciences course, you attend lectures, seminars, and tutorials on campus from Monday to Friday. The total workload amounts to 180 ECTS (credit points).

Costs & start of studies
The on-campus degree programme starts once a year in the winter semester (October).
