The Hertie School is a state-recognized private university with the right to award doctoral degrees, located in the centre of Berlin. It was founded in 2003 by the non-profit Hertie Foundation as a non-profit GmbH and established as a university in 2004. The language of instruction at Hertie School is English, and the university currently has 751 students (WS 2024/25).
Since 2008, the main campus has been located in Quartier 110 on Friedrichstrasse. From summer 2026, the move to the historic Robert Koch Forum on Dorotheenstrasse is planned, which is currently undergoing extensive renovation. This building is intended to offer space for over 900 students and staff with more than 10,000 m² of space.
The range of courses includes three two-year master's programmes: Master of Public Policy (MPP), Master of International Affairs (MIA), and Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS). In addition, there is an Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA), which can be taken on a flexible full-time or part-time basis. Since 2012, the university also offers a structured doctoral programme in Public Policy leading to a PhD in Governance or Dr. rer. pol. There are also various mentoring and further education opportunities available.
The Hertie School places particular emphasis on interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching as well as excellent research. It has several centres of expertise, including the Centre for Digital Governance, Centre for Fundamental Rights, Centre for International Security, Centre for Sustainability, the Jacques Delors Centre, and the Data Science Lab.
In the field of research and further education, the Hertie School closely collaborates with renowned international partner universities such as Sciences Po (Paris), the London School of Economics, Columbia University (New York), and Università Bocconi (Milan). Students have the opportunity to participate in semesters abroad or to obtain a double degree.
The Hertie School is accredited by the German Council of Science and Humanities, and its programmes are certified by the Accreditation Council. It consistently achieves top rankings in national and international rankings, especially in the fields of Public Administration, Political Science, and Social Policy.
As part of its strategic orientation, the Hertie School is strongly committed to diversity, equality, inclusion, and sustainability. It pursues an institutionalized DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) strategy, maintains its own Centre for Sustainability, and has been certified multiple times as a family-friendly university.
