Admission requirements
Applicants must have a first academic degree (B.A.) or an international equivalent. If you do not yet have a first degree, please indicate when you will obtain it when applying. The degree must be obtained by August 31 at the latest in order to be able to start the program on September 1. All applicants must be proficient in the English language and be able to confirm this with a corresponding certificate or by demonstrating native speaker proficiency.

The Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) at the Hertie School in Berlin trains a new generation of decision-makers who know how to combine political strategies with data to develop solutions for government, civil society, and business. This two-year programme is designed for students with technical and social science backgrounds who want to deepen their analytical skills.
In the first year, students learn the basics of the policy decision-making process as well as the principles of legislation and administration. At the same time, they are trained in essential mathematical concepts, statistical programming, and data structures. The practical course content provides an in-depth analysis and understanding of the various actors and their influences on policy-making.
In the second year, the focus is on advanced skills in data science such as Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing. Finally, students write a master's thesis that offers a data-driven solution to a political or social issue.
The Hertie School provides modern teaching resources such as a supercomputer and a makerspace to support students in their projects as best as possible. Graduates are well prepared to develop and implement responsibly data-driven solutions.
