Top-up degree or full bachelor’s – which path is right for you?

Private universities in Germany offer two fundamentally different routes into academic speech therapy: a top-up bachelor's for professionals who already hold a speech therapy qualification – or a primary qualifying degree that replaces the traditional vocational training entirely. The right choice depends on whether you already have a professional qualification.

Top-up degree for qualified speech therapists

If you already hold a German Logopädie qualification (or an equivalent international credential), a top-up programme lets you earn a bachelor's degree in a fraction of the usual time:

Why bother? A bachelor's unlocks higher salary brackets in public-sector employment (TVöD/TV-L), qualifies you for management roles in clinics and practices, and opens the door to master's programmes and academic careers.

Primary qualifying bachelor's for career starters

Without prior training, you enrol in a full programme that integrates the Staatliche Prüfung (state examination). You graduate with both professional accreditation and an academic degree:

  • FHM – dual study, 42 months, typically employer-funded
  • MSH Medical School Hamburg – dual study, 8 semesters
  • SRH Heidelberg – full-time campus, 6 semesters, €318/month
  • Fresenius University – "Academic Speech Therapy", 7 semesters full-time. Leads to the title "Sprachtherapeut/in" (speech therapist) rather than "Logopäd/in" – a separate, equally recognised professional title in Germany.
 Top-up degreePrimary qualifying degree
Prerequisite Completed speech therapy qualification University entrance qualification (Abitur or equivalent)
Duration 3–8 semesters (depending on credit transfer) 6–8 semesters
Tuition From €147/month (distance) €0 (dual, employer-funded) to €625/month (campus)
Professional accreditation Already held from prior training Integrated (state examination)
Degree Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Science + state examination
For international applicants: If you hold a speech therapy qualification from outside Germany, you may be eligible for the top-up programmes after credential evaluation (anabin database). Contact the university's admissions office to check whether your training qualifies for credit transfer.

Tuition fees at private universities

Dual programmes at FHM and MSH are typically employer-funded – you pay no tuition. Distance-learning fees start at €147/month (DIPLOMA). Campus programmes range from €318 to €625/month.

For career starters – the honest question: Traditional speech therapy training at a Berufsfachschule takes three years and is tuition-free in most German states. Why pay for a private degree? Three reasons: you earn vocational accreditation and a bachelor's in a single programme (saving time compared to training + top-up), you start at a higher salary bracket (E 9b vs. E 6 in public-sector pay), and you gain access to master's programmes and research careers. In dual programmes (FHM, MSH), tuition is also covered by the employer.

Funding options

For top-up degrees, German state funding can significantly reduce costs:

  • BAföG: A top-up degree at a Hochschule is generally BAföG-eligible. Entitlement depends on income, assets and any prior funding. Important: Aufstiegs-BAföG (AFBG) does not apply to university degrees – it exclusively funds vocational advancement training (Meister, Fachwirt etc.).
  • Aufstiegsstipendium: The SBB (Foundation for Talented Professionals) supports experienced professionals starting a first degree, with approx. €1,072/month. Speech therapists with at least two years of professional experience and above-average performance can apply.
  • KfW-Studienkredit: Up to €650/month, regardless of income, with repayment starting only after graduation.
  • Tax deduction: A top-up degree (as a second qualification) is fully deductible as a business expense in Germany – including tuition, travel and study materials.
  • Employer sponsorship: Many practices and clinics co-fund degrees in exchange for a retention commitment. With the current shortage of speech therapists, willingness to invest is high.

What will you study – and what goes beyond vocational training?

Traditional speech therapy training in Germany (Berufsfachschule) focuses on practical diagnostic and therapeutic skills. The university degree builds on this with evidence-based practice and research competencies – skills that vocational training barely covers.

Key academic content that goes beyond vocational training:

  • Evidence-based practice: Reading, evaluating and applying clinical research to therapy decisions
  • Research methods: Statistics, empirical methods, bachelor's thesis as an independent research project
  • Interdisciplinary depth: Neurolinguistics, phonetics, clinical psychology – depending on the university
  • Management & quality assurance: Practice management, ICF classification, health services research

Primary qualifying programmes additionally cover the vocational foundations: anatomy, ENT medicine, paediatrics, voice/speech/swallowing therapy plus extensive clinical placements.

Professional accreditation and the academicisation of therapy professions

"Logopäde" and "Logopädin" are protected professional titles in Germany. To use them, you must pass the Staatliche Prüfung (state examination) under the Gesetz über den Beruf des Logopäden (LogopG). This is required for professional practice and billing statutory health insurers – regardless of whether you qualify through vocational training or a university degree.

How do you obtain professional accreditation?

In primary qualifying programmes (FHM, MSH, SRH, Fresenius), the state examination is built into the curriculum – you graduate with both your degree and professional accreditation. In top-up programmes (IU, DIPLOMA), you already hold accreditation from your vocational training. The bachelor's adds an academic qualification without affecting your existing licence.

Where does Germany stand on academicisation?

In many EU countries (Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom), a bachelor's degree is already mandatory for speech therapists. Germany has lagged behind: pilot degree programmes have existed since 2009, but full academicisation has not been legislated. In practice, vocational training remains the standard pathway. Those who gain academic qualifications now are prepared for a potential future requirement – and already benefit from better pay and broader career options.

Career prospects and salary expectations

Entry-level salaries range from €2,800 to €3,400 gross per month. With a bachelor's degree and experience, significant increases are possible – particularly in clinical settings and management roles.

SettingEntry level (gross/month)Experienced (10+ years)
Speech therapy practice (employed) €2,800–3,200 €3,400–4,000
Hospital / rehabilitation clinic €3,000–3,400 €3,800–4,500
Own practice (self-employed) €3,000–4,000* €4,500–6,000*
Research / teaching (with master's) €3,500–4,000 €4,500–5,500

* Self-employed income varies significantly by location, caseload and insurance contracts. Sources: TVöD/TV-L 2025, gehalt.de 2025.

Salary advantage with a degree

In Germany's public sector, the qualification level directly affects pay. Speech therapists with a bachelor's degree are classified in pay group E 9b–10 (TVöD), while those with vocational training fall into E 6–8. Over a career, this can amount to a difference of over €100,000 gross. Compared to salaries in the US ($55,000–$85,000 entry) or the UK (£25,000–£35,000), German compensation is moderate – but factor in the lower cost of living, universal healthcare and tuition that is a fraction of Anglophone countries.

Which universities offer speech therapy?

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Yes. Both distance programmes (IU and DIPLOMA) are designed for working professionals. IU offers full-time, part-time and work-integrated models. DIPLOMA uses virtual lectures on Saturday mornings with short on-site blocks. Both allow online examinations.

Not for the primary qualifying programmes (FHM, MSH, SRH, Fresenius) – these accept applicants with a university entrance qualification. For top-up programmes, you need a recognised speech therapy qualification. International credentials can be evaluated for equivalence through the anabin database or the relevant state authority (Landesprüfungsamt).

Currently not as a dedicated speech therapy master's. However, graduates can transition into related programmes such as Clinical Linguistics, Health Sciences or Therapy Sciences. Several public universities (e.g. University of Potsdam, RWTH Aachen) offer specialised master's programmes that also accept graduates from private institutions.

Both qualify you to treat speech, language and swallowing disorders and to bill statutory health insurers. The difference is regulatory: "Logopäd/in" is governed by the LogopG and requires the state examination. "Sprachtherapeut/in" (speech therapist) is a separate academic qualification without its own professional law. In practice, both are equally recognised – clinics and practices hire both Logopäd/innen and Sprachtherapeut/innen.

Yes. Credit transfer is based on your completed qualification, not when you graduated. Both IU and DIPLOMA recognise speech therapy qualifications regardless of the graduation date. You simply need to submit your certificate and professional licence (Berufsurkunde). Work experience may additionally count towards specific modules – ask the admissions office for an individual assessment before enrolling.
