OVERVIEW
Ecological, cultural and social sustainability issues
The awareness that the development of the fast fashion industry and cheap clothing comes at a high environmental cost is increasingly gaining ground in all areas of fashion and is leading to changes in thinking and behaviour among fashion consumers, manufacturers and retailers alike. The Bachelor’s programme Sustainable Fashion builds on this and develops future-proof solutions based on design, theory and organisational principles. In addition to the fundamental study of design in the subjects of Design and Visualisation, Drawing for Design or Collection Development, theoretical-ethical and management-oriented skills are developed in the modules Sustainability in Supply Chain Management, Brand Management or International Product and Quality Management.
Learning through practice – teamwork instead of individual creators
The Bachelor’s degree Sustainable Fashion is a fashion design course that focuses less on training elite individual creators and more on working in solution-oriented design and production teams in order to meet current challenges. The course content is therefore not only taught theoretically but made directly tangible through numerous practical and cooperative projects with external industry partners. The aim is to establish important contacts during the course and to apply the knowledge acquired to practical questions.
In the subsequent study project, individual foci are deepened and an independent free project is carried out. This can focus on design-specific aspects of the professional field, e.g. the design and implementation of a themed fashion collection, or be of a theoretical and experimental nature, such as material technology investigations or innovative services and production processes.
PERSPECTIVES
The Bachelor’s degree course Sustainable Fashion appeals to prospective students who have an affinity for an in-depth approach to the phenomena of fashion and design in connection with sustainability issues and see their professional field in the corresponding areas or related disciplines. The course enables students both to acquire sound specialist knowledge of fashion, design and sustainability and to learn strategies for responsible fashion and quality management at local and global levels.
The degree enables employment in the field of socially responsible fashion production, ecological
circular economy in fashion, with associations of the organic textile industry or Fair Trade organisations, as well as in design and sustainability
with fashion companies – self-employment is also an option.
Possible areas of work and fields of activity after graduation include, for example, manufacturing companies producing ecologically sustainable fashion, medium-sized enterprises in the field of fashion and sustainability, fashion designers, start-ups, NGOs, Fair Trade organisations as well as associations of the organic textile industry or public institutions.
