Requirements and Target Group
The distance learning course “Education, Management and Leadership (M.A.)” is aimed at professionals who take on responsibility in the education sector or already hold responsible positions and wish to systematically expand their management knowledge. It is particularly targeted at educational specialists and executives, staff in educational institutions, education providers, human resources departments or (adult) education who seek a more business- and organisation-oriented approach to leadership and management tasks in the education sector. The programme is also suitable for individuals who want to advance change processes, quality assurance or the digitalisation of educational offerings within their organisation.
Which admission criteria do you need to consider?
The following formal admission requirements apply for enrolment in the Master’s programme “Education, Management and Leadership (M.A.)” at Hochschule Fresenius:
- Completed university degree (e.g. Bachelor’s, Diplom, Magister) with at least 180 ECTS credits
- Generally a relevant previous degree (e.g. pedagogy, social sciences, educational sciences, human resource management or related disciplines)
- Alternatively: admission possible as professionally qualified persons with a completed vocational training of at least two years in an area relevant to the course of study, at least three years of relevant professional experience, as well as successful passing of an aptitude test and a letter of motivation
- Technical college degrees and professional advancement qualifications can be recognised on a case-by-case basis
- No numerus clausus (NC) is required
If there is individual need, the university may request additional evidence (e.g. credit points in specific subject areas) or an admission interview.
For successful study, you should have an interest in educational questions and educational management. Important personal requirements are self-organisation, time management and the ability to learn independently in the digital environment. Leadership skills, communication skills, openness to change processes as well as an affinity for digital technologies and media are helpful. Initial practical experience in the education sector, in further and continuing education, personnel development or management functions is advantageous but not mandatory.
Study Content in Detail
In the Master's programme in Education, Management and Leadership (M.A.), you engage in a practical manner with the interface of pedagogy, management and modern leadership. The programme imparts skills in the areas of strategic educational management, organisational development and leadership competence in the educational context. Key topics include:
- Fundamentals of pedagogy as a science and interdisciplinary educational research
- Didactic models, principles and media education – with a focus on digital teaching and learning formats
- Quality management in education and ethical as well as sustainable educational processes
- Basics of labour law in management and leadership contexts

Course Progression: How Does the Distance Learning Work?
The distance learning programme is designed for a standard study period of 4 to 8 semesters (equivalent to 120 ECTS) and offers high flexibility in organisation. You learn completely independent of location and time via modern digital platforms, work on online learning units and take part in online examinations.
The start of the studies is possible on the first day of each month – extended study durations are also possible without additional costs (subject to adjustment of the fee model). Study materials are available online, supplemented by e-books, videos and StudyMags.
Additionally, you benefit from individual specialisations and can complete certificates from the international cooperation partner Arizona State University (ASU®). Regular online seminars and personal support from study coaches and lecturers ensure that you are optimally accompanied even in distance learning.

Study Location: How Is the Programme Organised?
The Master’s degree in Education, Management and Leadership at Hochschule Fresenius is offered purely as a distance learning programme. You study location-independently and organise your learning routine flexibly. All teaching and support takes place digitally via the Canvas learning platform.
Online examinations allow you to complete final exams and term papers from home. You are supported by a network of study coaches, lecturers and digital resources. Administration of the programme is also entirely online.
Although Hochschule Fresenius has locations in many German cities (e.g., Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Idstein, Cologne, Munich, Wiesbaden), attendance at on-site events is not mandatory for your distance studies.
Costs and Financing: What Should You Budget For?
The tuition fees for the Master's programme in Education, Management and Leadership in distance learning are – depending on the chosen study duration – as follows:
- 24 months: €525 per month
- 36 months: €395 per month
- 48 months: €315 per month
The total costs amount to €12,600 for a study period of 24 months, whereby discounted prices are possible through the use of promotion codes. The fees include all study materials, access to online libraries, support, examinations and ASU® certificates. Additional costs may arise for optional on-site appointments (e.g., for presence examinations).
Different options are available for financing:
- BAföG (depending on personal situation within the framework of Meister-BAföG/Aufstiegs-BAföG)
