Details
The model degree programme in Medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke was officially recognised in 2000 and is subject to the medical licensing regulations. The course lasts a total of six years and three months and comprises a First Study Phase (first and second year), a Second Study Phase (third to fifth year) as well as the Practical Year in the sixth year. The central teaching and learning method is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Students independently decide which approaches to take to solve medical problems and thus learn lifelong learning. In addition to professional training, maintaining personal relationships between teachers and students is of great importance. This contributes to strengthening personality and promoting teamwork skills.
From the first semester, the course includes practical learning formats such as perception practicums, examination courses and block placements in cooperating clinics, which together amount to 54 weeks. A special feature of the programme in Witten/Herdecke is the individual planning flexibility, which enables longer stays abroad and student projects. Thanks to a wide-ranging practical network, students can get to know different care models and international healthcare systems.
The mutual compatibility of traditional and alternative medicine is promoted through accompanying study offerings in Anthroposophical Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Homeopathy. The Studium Fundamentale completes the education by opening spaces for reflection on ethical, social and societal questions in medical practice.

- You must have a general higher education entrance qualification equivalent to the German "Abitur", as well as proof of a six-month nursing internship (can be partly in hospitals and other care settings, before enrolment).
- The application includes a selection procedure and aptitude test – that means you'll need to pass entrance exams, which may test natural sciences, some basic medical knowledge, logical reasoning, and often include a personal interview to check your motivation and fit for the programme.
- Applications for the summer semester: 01.06. – 15.07.; for the winter semester: 01.12. – 01.02.
About your chances: The university doesn’t publish exact acceptance rates for non-EU students or detailed statistics on how many are accepted, so it’s hard to say how competitive it specifically is for non-EU applicants. Witten/Herdecke puts a strong focus on personality and motivation rather than just grades (no strict numerus clausus), but the process is still selective. From experience, strong motivation and a clear interest in medicine help your application.
The programme is fully recognised and runs in German, so you’ll likely need German language skills at a high level. It’s also demanding – medicine is always a challenging subject. But many international students apply and succeed if they’re well-prepared.
Tip: If you want info on language requirements, visa, or support for international students, or if you’d like to discuss your personal profile, let me know! Or check the university’s official site for guidelines for international applicants.
