In the Bachelor’s degree programme Physician Assistance at the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM), you acquire medical, organisational and economic skills that prepare you for the role of a Physician Assistant. The aim is to independently carry out delegable medical tasks and to act as an interface between medical professionals, nursing staff and patients in modern healthcare.
- Medical fundamentals: You deepen biomedical and scientific knowledge, including pathology, medical terminology, basics of hygiene, pharmacology, medical history and examination techniques.
- Specialisation in subject areas: The focus areas lie in conservative as well as operative medicine – in theory and practice. Other modules include internal medicine, surgery, orthopaedics & trauma surgery, anaesthesia, emergency medicine and health sciences/public health.
- Practical skills: You develop abilities in operating room management, performing functional diagnostics, emergency management as well as in the application and assistance of medical procedures.
- Management & law: You can expect business administration with a focus on company formation, healthcare law, quality management and medical documentation.
- Soft skills and scientific work: The course promotes your team management, case management, presentation techniques and prepares you for scientific work in the health sector.
Many modules of the curriculum are aligned with the position paper of the German Medical Association on the future regulation of the Physician Assistant profession. Course structure – How does the Physician Assistant degree programme work?
The Bachelor’s degree programme Physician Assistance is designed as a practice-oriented full-time study with particular consideration for working professionals. The study model enables you to study alongside your job while continuing your work in the healthcare sector.
- Combination of face-to-face and online teaching: You attend regular presence weekends (up to three times per month) with sessions on Friday (9:00 am–6:00 pm) and Saturday (8:30 am–3:30 pm).
- Three attendance weeks per year: These take place in blocks from Monday to Saturday and deepen practical content on-site.
- Online lectures: Usually one evening per week (6:00 pm–9:15 pm) via online conference.
- Self-study: The teaching modules are supplemented by independent work with digital materials and case studies.
- Lecture-free periods: You have study-free time during the Christmas and Easter holidays (each 2 weeks).
The course is organised in three modules per year (trimesters). Individual modules that you have already covered during your medical training can be credited (e.g. orientation internship, medical fundamentals).
