Admission requirements
Admission to the Social Work degree programme is granted to those who meet one of the following requirements:
• General university entrance qualification (Abitur)
• Advanced technical college entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife)
• Passed master craftsman’s examination
• Intermediate school leaving certificate (at least Realschulabschluss) and a qualified completion of a recognised vocational training lasting at least 3 years, with an average/final grade of 2.5 or better (if these grades are not shown, the arithmetic mean of the individual subject grades applies)
• Completion of a professional advancement qualification of at least 400 teaching hours, a technical college or a vocational or administrative academy*
• Final examination in a state-recognised vocational occupation followed by at least 2 years of professional activity related to the course of study and passing a separate university entrance examination*
• Trained social-pedagogical child carers and assistants without university entrance qualification may be admitted to the university entrance qualification examination (HZB examination) after two years of professional activity related to the subject and may begin the degree programme directly as guest auditors
*according to the ordinance on the access of professionally qualified persons to universities in the state of Hesse
Further information on specific qualifications is gladly provided upon request. Applicants who do not meet the aforementioned requirements may initially attend the course as guest auditors if admission to the HZB examination is granted.
For foreign qualifications, equivalence must be demonstrated for admission.

There is a great demand for qualified professionals in the social sector. The broad range of tasks extends from the classical duties in child and youth education to the care of people with addictions and those under significant psychological stress, as well as the resolution of intercultural conflicts. The (online) distance learning Social Work programme prepares you comprehensively for your future profession, both in theory and practice, as all the content is conveyed to you with a very strong practical focus.
The (online) distance learning programme "Social Work" (B.A.) prepares you very thoroughly for this exciting and meaningful professional field. You will acquire all the skills needed to professionally support people in their respective life situations, manage projects, and improve social coexistence. You will learn the theoretical and methodological foundations of social work and develop pedagogical, sociological, social-psychological, and medical competencies. Social work in the (inter)cultural context is also a relevant subject area in the course. In addition, you will gain knowledge of the legal foundations of social work and sharpen your communication and presentation skills.
During your studies, you can also choose your personal, professionally oriented focus to further deepen your skills.
The specialisations in the bachelor's degree programme in Social Work are:
• Social work with children and young people
• Psychosocial counselling and health
• Digitalisation (in) social work
• Social work across the life span in old age
Course progression
At DIPLOMA University, you have the option to study the Bachelor's degree in Childhood Education in one of four forms: as an online degree, as a distance learning course on-site, as a face-to-face degree, or as a dual study programme.
The (online) distance learning programme at DIPLOMA University is designed according to the “blended learning” principle. This means you acquire the study content with the help of study guides and attend seminars. These usually take place on 12 to 14 Saturdays per semester – in exceptional cases also on weekday evenings. In the online study programme, these take place as live online seminars. You can also take your exams online or at an examination centre of your choice. In the distance learning course on-site, you complete your real presence seminars and exams at your chosen study centre – in Hamburg, Hanover, or Leipzig.
Costs & start of studies
The (online) distance learning programme as well as the dual study programme at DIPLOMA University start every year in the summer semester (April) and winter semester (October). After individual review, it is also possible to begin your studies at any other time.
The face-to-face degree begins once a year in the winter semester (October).
