Study contents and specialisations

In the dual Bachelor's degree programme in speech therapy at the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences, students learn the interdisciplinary basics of speech therapy in the fields of medicine, linguistics, phonetics, psychology and education. Further contents are the logopaedic core areas of speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders as well as the basics of scientific work.

The logopaedic core areas are taught in theory and practice, with particular emphasis on the reflected theory-practice relationship and the evidence-based knowledge transfer. Particular emphasis is placed on the connection to international standards of logopaedic practice.

The curriculum includes the following modules:

  • 1st semester: Basics of scientific work, knowledge management & professionalisation, assessment & diagnostics
  • 2nd semester: health & education, treatment & action planning, diagnostic strategies
  • 3rd semester: Scientific methodological competence in professional practice, justifying treatment, diagnostic strategies & target planning
  • 4th semester: Concepts for prevention & health promotion, treatment & documentation, evidence-based practice in speech therapy, indication-specific therapy & documentation
  • 5th semester: Empirical work, counselling & educational offers, effect analyses & therapy control
  • 6th semester: Counselling and coordination processes, process evaluation & effectiveness testing
  • 7th semester: Elective 1 out of 3: (quality management, self-management in the context of health, project management in the context of research), research colloquium, final examination

From the very beginning, observation phases and practice learning periods are integrated into the study programme, so that students get to know the therapeutic work in a logopaedic practice already from the first semester. The observation periods accompanying the studies take place in particular in our academic teaching practices in Idstein and Hamburg.

In the context of interdisciplinary courses or elective areas included in the compulsory area, students learn together with students from other therapeutic degree programmes such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and/or osteopathy. This prepares students for the interdisciplinarity that is also required in the profession.

In the elective area, students can participate in courses in the overall area of the university, especially in the Department of Health & Social Affairs, or initiate individual projects closely related to speech therapy.

With the internationally recognised Bachelor of Science degree, graduates of the Speech Therapy (B.Sc.) programme at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences also receive full authorisation to provide remedies in the field of speech therapy, so that they can be employed like state-certified speech therapists in Germany and set up their own practice (decision of the GKV-Spitzenverband in accordance with § 124 Para. 4 SGB V).
