What content does the Cardiovascular Perfusion degree programme convey?
In the dual Bachelor's programme Cardiovascular Perfusion (B.Sc.) at Akkon University, you will learn to combine medical expertise, technical know-how, and practical skills for use in the operating room. The study content is structured into three main areas:
- Medical Fundamentals: Anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, especially of the cardiovascular system, cardiac and vascular medicine, perfusion, surgery, internal medicine, anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, infectiology, and hygiene. You will be involved in diagnostics, therapy, and clinical processes.
- Cardiotechnics and Medical Technology: Functioning and control of heart-lung machines, technical systems in the operating room, basics of physics, electrical engineering, and measurement technology. You will monitor and secure technical processes during surgical procedures and deal with aspects of quality management and patient safety.
- Scientific and communicative skills: Scientific work, medical statistics, communication within the interprofessional surgical team, organization of the healthcare system, legal framework, as well as working in a structured manner under high responsibility and time pressure.
You will develop the ability to safely operate cardiotechnical systems, take responsibility in the operating room, and act as a link between medicine and technology.
How is the structure of the dual degree programme organized?
The programme lasts for six semesters and is designed to be dual and integrated with the profession. It starts each year in the winter semester on October 1st. The close cooperation with the German Heart Center of the Charité ensures a high proportion of practical placements in clinical routine. Typical procedures include:
- Alternating between theory phases at the university and practical phases with a dual cooperation partner, for example, in specialized clinics or cardiac surgical centers.
- During theory phases, you attend seminars, lectures, and simulation exercises on the functioning of heart-lung machines, medical basics, and emergency management.
- In the practical sections, you work under supervision in the operating room, gradually taking responsibility and learning about interprofessional teamwork.
- The programme comprises a total of 180 ECTS points and is structured in a way that allows you to continue working in your learned profession and gain practical experience.
The final exams as well as project and research work are directly tailored to future professional practice. The state approval of the degree programme has been requested, and the accreditation process is ongoing.
