Course Content in Detail

In the part-time Bachelor's degree programme Biosciences (B.Sc.) at Hochschule Fresenius, you acquire sound knowledge of the scientific fundamentals and applied methods of the biosciences. Core subjects include mathematics, physics as well as the basics of chemistry, laboratory techniques and biology. You become familiar with physiological processes, biochemistry, organic chemistry and microbiology. Course content such as statistical methods, instrumental analytics as well as molecular genetics and genetic engineering are also part of the training, alongside Technical English and work-related key qualifications.

Advanced modules cover bioanalytics, immunology, histology and cell cultures, medical microbiology, virology, pharmacology and toxicology. The programme also includes an introduction to bioinformatics, legal frameworks and ethics in biomedicine as well as scientific working methods. From the fifth semester onwards, you can specialise either in biomedicine or business administration. A practical semester and the final Bachelor's thesis prepare you specifically for your professional entry or further academic paths.

Course Progression: How does the part-time degree programme work?

The Bachelor's degree in Biosciences is designed as a part-time course and offers you a high degree of flexibility: you can choose to complete it in 6, 8 or 10 semesters. Classes take place two to three days a week, allowing the degree to be well combined with employment. There is no general attendance requirement, so you can organise your learning process individually.

The first semesters focus on imparting scientific fundamentals and methodological skills. In the fifth semester, you specialise in one of two elective focus areas. A firmly integrated practical semester emphasises the transfer of knowledge relevant to the profession. In the final semester, you write your Bachelor's thesis, combined with a viva. Accompanying this are additional optional offers for personal development, language courses as well as networking and start-up events.

Career Opportunities & Job Prospects: What perspectives do you have?

As a graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme Biosciences, you qualify for a variety of positions in the life sciences and related fields. You work, for example,

• in research and development in companies in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals or medical technology,
• in product development and quality control,
• in quality management,
• in analytical or environmental laboratories,
• at authorities and institutions such as environmental, health or forensic agencies,
• as a laboratory manager with personnel responsibility,
• as an environmental analyst.

By choosing a specialisation in business administration, additional career opportunities arise at the interface between science and management, for example in controlling or project management. The degree also forms the basis for a subsequent Master's programme in subjects such as biochemistry, biotechnology or biomedical sciences.

Study Location: Where do you study Biosciences part-time?

Your studies take place at the Idstein campus of Hochschule Fresenius – the traditional main location of the university in the southern Hessian Rheingau-Taunus district. The modern laboratories and seminar rooms are located in the historic Building A for the Department of Chemistry & Biology as well as in the new House B for Health and Social Sciences.

The Idstein campus is characterised by a familial learning atmosphere, small study groups and direct contact with lecturers. The region around Idstein offers numerous internship opportunities and access to a large partner network of the university. Thanks to the flexible attendance structure and the possibility of individual time management, the study location is especially suitable for working professionals.

Costs and Financing: What do you need to plan for?

The monthly tuition fees amount to 505 euros. The total costs for the degree – depending on the duration of studies – are around 18,180 euros for the regular study period of six semesters. In addition, a one-time registration fee of 250 euros applies.

Included in the price are all courses, examination fees, access to the laboratories as well as optional additional offers such as language courses, events or career counselling (StudyPLUS).
