Requirements and Target Group
The English-language Master's programme "Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis" at Hochschule Fresenius is aimed at graduates of scientific Bachelor's programmes focusing on Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or Food Chemistry. The programme is suitable for anyone who wants to deepen their skills in the field of bioanalytical and pharmaceutical analytics, modern laboratory methods, and regulatory issues. It particularly targets individuals aspiring to a scientific career in research & development, the pharmaceutical industry, quality assurance, or the forensic environment, placing value on an internationally oriented, practice-focused course of study.
What Subject Knowledge Do You Need?
For admission to the Master's programme you need:
- A first professional academic degree (Bachelor or equivalent) with at least 180 credit points (ECTS) in Applied Chemistry or a related subject such as Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology (with a chemical focus), or Food Chemistry.
- For the 120-ECTS variant: Degree with at least 180 ECTS.
- For the 60-ECTS variant: Degree with at least 240 ECTS and verifiable fundamentals in chemical and bioanalytical analytical methods.
- English language skills at least at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- For fewer ECTS (less than 240) for the 60-ECTS variant: The possibility to credit extra-university and university achievements, e.g. through relevant professional experience, further training, certificates, or special commitment up to a maximum of 30 ECTS.
You should have basic laboratory and analytical knowledge and show an interest in scientific research as well as chemical and pharmaceutical issues. Accuracy in data documentation, analytical thinking skills, and the willingness to independently work on complex topics are also necessary for the programme. Practical experience in the laboratory, ability to work in a team, and enthusiasm for international and interdisciplinary work are advantageous. The language of instruction is English, so you should be confident in specialist language and communication.
Study Content in Detail
In the Master’s degree programme Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis (M.Sc.) at Hochschule Fresenius, you deepen your knowledge in the field of modern analytical methods for chemistry, pharmacy, and forensics. The curriculum includes the theoretical and practical analysis of biomolecules and pharmaceutical active ingredients as well as methods of drug discovery and pharmaceutical analysis. You acquire skills in advanced analytical laboratory methods, structural characterisation of substances, mass spectrometric analytics, and data analysis. This is complemented by content from pharmacology, toxicology, clinical and biochemical analytics, and regulatory aspects (GMP, Risk Analysis, Regulatory Affairs).
- Analysis of biomolecules & bioanalytical laboratory practice
- Pharmacology, toxicology, and forensic analytics
- Clinical, biochemical and genetic analytical procedures
- Analytical Data Science, statistics, and the use of pharmacophore models
- Structural analysis, proteomics, and large molecule separations
- Quality management, GMP, and regulatory requirements
- Research methodology, planning and implementation of independent projects
Practical laboratory exercises complement the modules, including laboratory practicals on analytical methods, cell culture and genetic procedures as well as forensic and pharmaceutical laboratory analysis. With the final Master’s thesis and disputation, you demonstrate your ability for independent scientific research.
How is the Master’s degree structured?
The course is organised as a full-time on-campus programme at the Idstein campus and usually lasts four semesters (120 ECTS). The programme can be shortened in individual cases if relevant prior achievements are recognised (e.g. study variants with 60 or 90 ECTS). The courses are taught in English and combine theory and practice in the laboratory. During the course, lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, and project work alternate. The start of studies is possible each winter semester.
- Full-time programme with strong practical integration (laboratory units and project work)
- All courses are conducted in English
- Start of studies in the winter semester
- Final thesis (Master’s Thesis) with colloquium in the last semester
Teaching and laboratory practice take place in small groups to enable intensive supervision. Additional offers within the framework of StudyPLUS, such as language courses and career workshops, are available to you each semester.
Career prospects & job opportunities after graduation
With a Master’s degree in Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis, diverse career prospects open up for you both in Germany and internationally. The combination of analytical science, laboratory practice, and regulatory knowledge qualifies you for specialised professional and leadership positions. Typical fields of application include:
- Research & development in the chemical-pharmaceutical industry (e.g. drug development, biotechnological research)
- Forensic analytics at authorities or laboratories (e.g. criminal technical investigations, toxicological reports)
- Quality assurance and Regulatory Affairs in pharmaceutical and biotech companies
- Clinical research institutions and laboratory service providers
- Food and environmental analytics
You can take on tasks in planning, analysis and documentation of scientific projects, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, or work as a scientific employee in industrial and university research. Starting a doctorate is also possible with the Master’s degree.
Study location: How you study at the Idstein campus
The programme is offered exclusively at the Idstein location (Hesse), the traditional main site of Hochschule Fresenius. Studies take place in modern and historic buildings of the Idstein campus. Here, excellently equipped laboratories in the Department of Chemistry & Biology are available to you. The library, group workrooms as well as the canteen and recreational facilities offer the best study conditions. Idstein is conveniently located in the Rhine-Main area with good connections to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main.
