Requirements and Target Audience
The Master's programme in Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis is aimed at graduates of a scientific Bachelor's degree who wish to specialise in the fields of analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical research, and bioanalysis. The target audience in particular includes individuals with an academic background in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, physics, or biology who are pursuing a career in research-oriented pharmaceutical industry, clinical analytics, quality control, or forensic science. The English-taught on-campus programme is also aimed at international students and professionals who want to specifically further develop their methodological, practical, and interdisciplinary skills.
Which admission requirements must you meet?
To be admitted to the Master's degree in Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis, you need:
- A Bachelor's degree with at least 180 ECTS in a chemistry-related discipline such as analytical chemistry, chemistry, pharmacy, physics, or biology
- English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference, demonstrated for example by TOEFL iBT (minimum 70 points) or IELTS (minimum 6.0), if you are not a native English speaker
No further specific entrance tests or professional experience are required, but prior laboratory experience is advantageous.
You should have a strong interest in analytical chemistry, laboratory work, and pharmaceutical research. Good English skills are important, as all courses and exams are conducted in English. Success in the programme also requires pronounced analytical skills, precision, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
Teamwork skills, the ability to work independently in a laboratory environment, as well as a willingness to continually develop professionally are recommended personal prerequisites. Experience in dealing with scientific literature and routine laboratory work facilitates the start.
Study Content in Detail
In the Master's degree programme Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis (M.Sc.), you acquire in-depth knowledge in the chemical and analytical examination of pharmaceutically active substances and biomolecules. The programme combines expertise from bioanalysis, pharmaceutical analytics, clinical and forensic analysis. Typical skills you will gain include:
- Analysis and characterisation of biomolecules
- Pharmacology and toxicology
- Clinical and biochemical analytics
- Methods of structural analysis
- Application of modern analytical measurement techniques (including separation of large molecules, laboratory courses on forensics, food and pharmaceutical analytics)
- Data science for the evaluation of analytical data including working with modern analysis and simulation tools (e.g. pharmacophore models)
- Quality assurance in the analytical and pharmaceutical environment
- Planning, implementation and documentation of independent research projects
The programme is practice-oriented: You work in modern laboratories, independently handle projects, evaluate analytical data and learn the latest scientific methods in the field of pharmaceutical analytics.
How does the study programme proceed?
The programme is organised as a full-time on-campus course with a standard period of study of two semesters. The language of instruction is English. You spend the majority of your time in hands-on laboratory exercises, case studies and workshops.
The content is taught through theoretical lectures, laboratory practicals as well as group work and company excursions. The second semester is generally strongly focused on the independent conduction of research projects and the Master’s thesis.
The study structure is internationally oriented and specifically prepares you for activities in research-related and applied fields.
Career Prospects & Professional Opportunities for Graduates
With the Master’s degree in Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis, you qualify for numerous positions in the chemical-pharmaceutical industry as well as in research and development. Typical professional fields are:
- Research and development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors
- Quality assurance and quality management
- Product management of pharmaceutical products
- Contract analysis and commissioned analytics (Contract Analysis)
- Technical-scientific sales
- Work in analytical laboratories (e.g. clinical, diagnostic and forensic laboratory analysis)
- Employment in international scientific teams or industry segments
The internationally oriented programme opens up career prospects both in Germany and worldwide. Graduates often work at the interface between research, monitoring, product development and regulatory evaluation. A doctorate is also possible with the scientific profile of the programme.
Where do you study? Campus location and campus life
The Master’s programme is offered at the traditional main campus of Hochschule Fresenius in Idstein (Hesse). You study in small groups, benefit from a close learning community and have access to modern laboratories and research equipment.
Idstein is characterised by short distances and a personal atmosphere. The university has an extensive network with regional and international companies from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, which facilitates the search for internships, practical projects and cooperation partners for the Master’s thesis.
Costs and Financing – What do you need to invest?
The total costs for the two-semester full-time programme amount to 21,120 euros (equivalent to 880 euros monthly over a 24-month study period). In addition, there is a registration fee of 695 euros. The price includes all study and laboratory services as well as individual supervision of your Master's thesis. You have various options for financing:
- Scholarship programmes of Hochschule Fresenius and other organisations
- Education loans from KfW
- Aufstiegs-BAföG (subject to meeting the requirements)
