Admission requirements

With your M.Sc. in Bioanalytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis, you will work in research and development, quality assurance or product management, for example.

The Master's programme Bio- and Pharmaceutical Analysis (Master of Science) is aimed at graduate engineers in the field of chemistry or graduates of comparable programmes as well as interested parties with a Bachelor's degree in the fields of analytics, chemistry, pharmacy, physics or biology.

Prerequisite for admission to this degree programme is a successfully completed Bachelor's degree (with a grade of 2.5 or better) in a chemistry-related field of study (analytics, chemistry, pharmacy, physics, biology) with at least 240 ECTS credits, or a comparable academic degree, such as a Diplom degree. In case of a deviating grade point average, the eligibility to study can be proven by a separate selection interview, if necessary.

Participants who have less than 240 ECTS points or whose previous knowledge in analytics is not sufficient can acquire missing points or knowledge via a bridge course.

In addition, you provide proof of your English language skills via one of these language certificates: TOEFL (Internet 85 points) or IELTS (at least 6.0 points) or Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (grade B).

Study content and specialisations

Fast and precise analytical methods are more important than ever in research, quality control and for monitoring production processes. Analytical chemistry, which deals with the identification and quantity determination of chemical substances, plays an important role in almost all chemical sub-disciplines.

The increasing importance of biopharmaceuticals (biologicals), the achievements of modern medical diagnostics and the solution of complicated forensic issues are inconceivable without analytical excellence.

So far, however, there are only a few degree programmes on the European market that focus on the field of analytical chemistry. The English-language Master's programme "Master of Bio- and Pharmaceutical Analysis" at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences starts here and offers in-depth knowledge of analytical methods such as immunoassays or mass spectrometry and their specific fields of application.

Participants with a bachelor's or diploma degree learn to know and apply different methods, to view and evaluate them comparatively. In addition, they gain knowledge about the essential legal requirements as they are relevant for the development, registration, production and distribution of medicinal products. Another important aspect are measures for quality assurance, also of the analytical procedures themselves.

The School of Chemistry, Biology & Pharmacy at Fresenius University of Applied Sciences attaches great importance to always tailoring the lecture content to the current and contemporary requirements and questions of the analytical sciences. Lectures are held, for example, on the analysis of proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and lipids as well as on the 3D structure elucidation of biomolecules.

The curriculum includes the following modules:

  • Semester 1: Bioanalysis, Pharmceutical Analysis, Clinical and Forensic Analysis, Applied Research Lab
  • Semester 2: Master Thesis

In numerous practical phases in the laboratory, students can also work independently on various projects and gain experience with modern analytical equipment. The consideration of case studies and excursions to companies from the pharmaceutical and bioanalytical industry with integrated workshops round off the study programme and help students find a suitable topic and potential cooperation partners for the final Master's thesis. The Master's thesis can also be carried out abroad.
