Admission: What Do I Need for the Media Design Degree?
The following formal admission requirements apply for enrolment in the Bachelor’s degree in Media Design – Communication Design & AI:
- General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), advanced technical college entrance qualification or an equivalent recognized qualification.
- Alternatively, admission without Abitur is possible according to § 11 BerlHG with subject-specific eligibility to study.
- Applicants from abroad may have to have their university entrance qualification checked by official bodies (e.g. uni-assist).
- Required for application are a letter of motivation (approx. 1 page), relevant certificates (final certificate can be submitted later), a CV with photo, as well as work samples (portfolio) demonstrating creative aptitude.

How the Course Progresses
The programme is offered over seven semesters in on-campus format and comprises 210 ECTS credits. At the start of your studies, the creative-technological basics as well as the methodological foundation knowledge are taught. From the 3rd semester onwards, specialisation subjects such as communication design with AI support, UX/UI design and strategic brand management are the focus. Practice-oriented work plays a special role: many courses involve independently conceptualising, implementing and presenting creative projects – often in small teams and together with practical partners.
- 1st–2nd semester: Creative-technological basics and introduction to design theory
- 3rd–5th semester: Advanced study in communication design, brand communication, cross-media projects and AI-supported design
- 6th semester: Practical semester, usually in companies with a design focus in Germany or abroad
- 7th semester: Bachelor thesis and presentation of your own final project
Besides the compulsory modules, you can set your own priorities and choose innovative projects in data-driven design, AI and sustainability. All project results are incorporated into your personal portfolio, which you will take with you into your professional life at the end of your studies.
