Requirements for the Bachelor in Midwifery
The dual study programme in “B.Sc. Midwifery” at the University of Health Professions Eberswalde is aimed at everyone who aspires to a career in healthcare and wants to qualify both academically and practically.
It is ideal for individuals who want to make a direct contribution to the healthcare of women and families as midwives and who are interested in interdisciplinary cooperation as well as innovative approaches in healthcare.
For admission you need:
- Higher education entrance qualification: You need a higher education entrance qualification that includes completion of at least twelve years of general schooling. Alternatively, you can demonstrate completed vocational training that is recognised according to the requirements of the Midwifery Act.
- Medical certificate: A current medical certificate must be provided confirming that you are medically able to pursue the profession of midwife.
- Extended certificate of good conduct: A current extended certificate of good conduct is required. This can be applied for via the relevant online portal of the Federal Office of Justice or in writing at your registration authority (e.g. town hall, municipal office, citizen’s office).
- Binding confirmation from the practical training partner: You need a binding confirmation from a practical training institution in accordance with § 15 HebG, confirming that you can complete the practical part of your academic midwifery training there.
- Successful admission interview: An admission interview at the UHP (HGE) is part of the admission procedure.
The application is made both to the UHP (HGE) and to the chosen practical training institution. Places depend on mutual confirmation. After receiving confirmation from a practical training institution, you apply to the UHP (HGE). After admission to the course, you sign a contract with the practical training institution for the practical part of your training. Course Structure and Content of the Dual B.Sc. Midwifery Degree at HGE
The Bachelor’s degree programme “Midwifery” at the University of Health Professions Eberswalde is a primarily qualifying dual full-time degree course lasting 7 semesters in Eberswalde.
This accredited degree comprises 210 Credit Points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and concludes with the qualification “Bachelor of Science” as well as a state examination to obtain the professional title “Midwife”.
Students acquire both content-related and personal competences to independently and comprehensively practise midwifery activities in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition to a focus on scientifically-based decisions, health economic and business management topics are also covered to meet regional and supra-regional care needs in the field of midwifery.
Here is an overview of the course structure and content:
- 1st semester: Fundamentals of midwifery practice, Biomedical fundamentals in the context of midwifery I, Professional design of communication, training, counselling and instruction processes, Practical module 1: Understanding the basics of professional midwifery practice
- 2nd semester: Midwifery care in physiological courses of pregnancy, birth, postpartum period and breastfeeding, Biomedical fundamentals in the context of midwifery II, Scientific work I, Practical module 2: Designing evidence-based midwifery care in physiological courses
- 3rd semester: Fundamentals of risk assessment in midwifery care, Practical midwifery work in various care settings, Psychosocio-cultural influences on professional relationship development in midwifery care, Practical module 3: Applying fundamentals of risk assessment in various care settings as a basis for decision-making
- 4th semester: Midwifery care in pathological courses and in special life situations, Legal and structural framework conditions of midwifery care, Scientific work II, Practical module 4: Classifying evidence-based midwifery care in pathological courses
- 5th semester: Management of complex care processes, Emergency management in midwifery practice, Career and development planning, Practical module 5: Designing complex care processes
- 6th semester: Prevention and health promotion in family systems, Intra- and interprofessional coordination of care processes, Quality and risk management, Professional midwifery practice in highly complex care processes, Practical module 6: Designing, evaluating and assessing highly complex care processes

Lectures take place during the usual lecture periods in the winter semester between October and January as well as in the summer semester between April and June at the university.
The practical study phases are usually carried out at the practical institution in the winter semester between January and March as well as in the summer semester between July and September.
The state examinations for the professional qualification as a midwife are conducted within the framework of module examinations in the final semesters.
The Teaching Concept of HGE for the B.Sc. Midwifery
The statutory reform of midwifery training according to the WHO recommendations, which envisages the academisation of the training, is implemented by the University of Health Professions Eberswalde in its study concept for the B.Sc. Midwifery degree programme.
The programme at HGE is characterised by application relevance and practical orientation: simulation-based teaching and internships are an integral part of the dual degree at the university and consistently take place from the first to the seventh semester.
Each module of the degree programme imparts subject-specific, methodological, practical and interdisciplinary content as well as subject-related, methodological and interprofessional competences and key qualifications.
Thematic focuses are set in the areas of business management, sustainability and digital transformation in healthcare.
Joint teaching and learning units with the students of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Nursing promote interprofessional learning at all learning locations of the theoretical and practical study phases.
Students are also involved in current research, engage with current research topics in this context and in turn receive research assignments on questions arising during the internships.
