This programme targets experienced nurses who have trained in Germany and now want an academic upgrade for leadership, quality or evidence-based roles. Admission requirements
Entry is tied to your prior nursing training. You study 100% online in German; on-campus presence is not required.
- Completed nursing training in Germany is mandatory: accepted are Altenpfleger/in, Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger/in, Gesundheits- und Kinderkrankenpfleger/in, or generalist Pflegefachperson (according to German law).
- Important limitation: nursing diplomas completed outside Germany cannot be recognised for this degree. Without German nursing training, admission is not possible.
- With (Fach-)Abitur: general/fachgebundene Hochschulreife or Fachhochschulreife, or an equivalent international school-leaving certificate. International certificates are subject to an equivalence check (e.g. via recognised German frameworks) plus the required German nursing training.
- Without Abitur: qualified German nursing vocational training as above, plus at least 3 years of full-time professional experience in nursing.
- Teaching language: German. If your schooling was not in German, provide one of these certificates (minimum B2, issued within 5 years):
- TestDaF (TND3), at least 3 points in all parts
- DSH (DSH-1)
- telc Deutsch B2
- ÖSD B2
- Recognition of prior learning: based on your German nursing training, up to 90 ECTS are typically recognised, shortening the standard duration accordingly.
Personal requirements
Success in a fully online, German-taught programme depends on consistent self-management and solid language skills. You should be able to read and write academic German (policies, laws, research) and communicate clearly in virtual seminars. Plan realistically for around 20–40 hours per week depending on your time model: approx. 20 h (36 months), 30 h (24 months), or 40 h (18 months). Rotating shifts are manageable if you create fixed study slots, protect recovery time, and pace assessments.

You build an academic profile on top of your professional nursing background. Typical content clusters include:
Nursing science, evidence and the nursing process. You sharpen your professional identity in “Nursing as a Profession”, learn research and academic writing, and apply evidence in practice. The “Seminar: Nursing Process” deepens assessment and planning, complemented by modules on elements and fields of highly complex nursing.
Management, quality and law in care. You cover leadership basics in “Introduction to Nursing Management”, implement audits and standards in “Quality Management in Nursing”, and secure decisions with “Nursing Law” and the “Framework Conditions of the Healthcare Market”.
People and organisations. “Interaction and Communication in Organisations” trains team and stakeholder communication. “Psychology” and “Sociology” add human and social science perspectives that are essential for guidance, counselling and change in care settings.
Electives to shape your path. In the final semester you choose two specialisations, for example Evidence-Based Practice, Gerontology and Gerontosociology, Pedagogy and General Didactics, Controlling and Conflicts, Billing and Financing Systems, Digitalisation in Therapy and Care, or Leadership/HR topics. Your Bachelor’s thesis caps the programme.
Designed for working nurses. Prior learning is systematically recognised; qualified professionals typically receive 90 ECTS and start directly with advanced modules, completing in around three semesters (standard duration shown for this track). There are no compulsory on-site practical phases in this distance-learning programme; optional seminars may be offered.
How does studying in the Nursing (B.Sc.) work?
Teaching language: German – proof required
The programme is delivered in German. For admission to a German-taught distance degree, IU requires proof of German at about B2 (GER). Accepted certificates include TestDaF (TND3 with at least 3 points in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2 or ÖSD B2. Certificates must normally be recent (not older than five years). IU may accept other B2 proofs at its discretion.
Study model: 100% online distance learning
You study fully online via IU’s digital campus. Start dates are flexible, and three pacing models (about 18, 24 or 36 months) let you align study with shifts and family life. Exams are available online around the clock or at test centres. There is no mandatory attendance on campus; fakultative (optional) seminars may complement the online offering. The distance programme is ZFU-approved (1113120c).
Learning experience, class sizes and support
Learning combines self-paced materials (scripts, videos, exercises) with live online sessions and virtual classrooms. The central study method is guided self-study; live formats usually run in small groups for interaction and Q&A. Academic tutors, forums and study/coaching services provide personal support. Assessments and how you are examined
Depending on the module, you complete written exams (online or at a centre), term papers, presentations or portfolios. Flexible 24/7 online examinations are a hallmark of the format. The programme concludes with the Bachelor’s thesis.
What does the Nursing (B.Sc.) cost?
Tuition is charged monthly and depends on your pacing model. The lower the monthly rate, the higher the total over time. As guidance for regular, undiscounted fees: roughly €399 per month for 18 months (€7,182 in total), €344 per month for 24 months (€8,256 in total), or €259 per month for 36 months (€9,324 in total). In addition, there's a one-time graduation fee of €2,299. A free extension of up to 12 months is typically possible without changing the monthly rate.
What can add costs? Optional on-site exams at test centres may involve small local fees, and personal study materials (e.g. additional books or hardware) are at your discretion. If IU recognises prior learning, your workload and total tuition can decrease; as a rule of thumb, recognition reduces tuition by €30 per accredited ECTS. Tuition is invoiced in euros; you plan your own cost of living where you reside, as there is no required relocation for this distance programme.
What careers and recognition does the Nursing (B.Sc.) offer?
