Who is the MBA in Security and Disaster Management suitable for?
The MBA in Security and Disaster Management is aimed at professionals who wish to qualify for leadership positions in the fields of security management, disaster protection, or crisis management. The study programme is particularly suitable for individuals with practical experience in security-related roles, such as in companies, authorities, non-profit organisations, fire departments, emergency services, or the military. The target group comprises specialists and managers who already have responsibility for handling risks, prevention concepts, or the coordination of emergencies, and who want to deepen their knowledge through business and management-oriented continuing education.
Admission: What criteria do you need to meet?
The following formal requirements apply for admission to the MBA in Security and Disaster Management:
- A completed bachelor's degree programme of at least six semesters (minimum 180 ECTS) or an equivalent professional qualifying university degree (e.g. Diploma, state examination, Magister, Master).
- At least one year of relevant full-time professional experience after completion of the first degree. The work must have a professional connection to security or disaster management or the first degree.
- Alternatively, admission is possible with a relevant vocational qualification plus at least two years of relevant professional experience and additionally a further qualification for career advancement or university entrance qualification as well as a passed aptitude test at Hochschule Fresenius (special admission).
- Proof of German and English language skills at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
You should have an interest in strategic tasks and management processes. Important personal requirements are:
- Analytical and structured thinking ability to assess complex security situations
- Willingness to collaborate interdisciplinarily in mixed teams
- Ability to lead and communicate, especially in crisis situations
- Experience in handling responsibility, risk management, and decision-making under uncertainty
- High self-motivation and self-organisation skills for part-time study alongside work
- Interest in business, legal, and ethical issues in the context of security and disaster protection
What do you learn in the MBA Security and Disaster Management?
In the Master’s programme Security and Disaster Management, you systematically deal with the control and management of complex risks. You acquire skills to develop security and prevention concepts and implement them professionally in international contexts. Key study contents include:
- Security management and disaster management
- Strategic management in crisis contexts
- Leadership and leadership personality in the security sector
- Compliance for security companies (including law & Corporate Social Responsibility)
- Quantitative decision bases for risk analyses
- Research projects and case studies on real threat scenarios
In the elective area, you can, for example, specialise in IT security and information protection, emergency management and emergency medicine, international management, or other topics. You learn to link risk and security aspects with economic considerations, make decisions in interdisciplinary teams, and also assess the ethical and social impacts of your actions. Confident handling of challenges such as terrorism, natural disasters, or digital threats is a central learning objective.
How does the part-time programme work?
The course is designed as a part-time programme with a standard duration of four semesters (90 ECTS). You study at a dedicated online campus of Hochschule Fresenius. The teaching sessions take place as virtual live lectures 1–2 evenings per week as well as two Saturdays per month. Almost all exams can be taken flexibly online; alternatively, six examination centres are available (Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Wiesbaden).
The curriculum combines compulsory modules with elective modules, enabling you to design your focus individually. To interfere as little as possible with your professional life, the sessions are organised as block seminars or in the evenings and at weekends. The learning offer is supplemented by practice-oriented projects and case studies, which you can also apply to your own professional questions. The international orientation, working in small learning groups and the targeted promotion of leadership skills characterise the programme.
What career opportunities does the degree offer you?
With the MBA Security and Disaster Management, you qualify for a variety of positions in the private and public sectors:
- Security manager in companies, authorities, organisations
- Disaster manager in civil protection, aid organisations or international institutions
- IT security consultant
- Head of operations and emergency staffs as well as crisis management teams
- Specialists for compliance, risk analysis and prevention strategies
Graduates are also in demand for management and staff positions in companies, insurance companies, aid organisations or the public sector. Activities in security research, consultancy with a focus on crises or in international organisations are also possible. The degree also opens the way to specialised leadership tasks in IT and information security.
How does studying at the Online Campus work?
Learning takes place independently of location at the Online Campus of Hochschule Fresenius. You participate in live-streamed online seminars and are connected via digital platforms with lecturers and fellow students. Accompanying learning platforms support you in self-study. The focus on virtual teaching allows you to study flexibly alongside your professional life.
Exams can be taken either online or on-site at the examination centres in Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich or Wiesbaden. Additional offers such as personal career support, networking events and further training courses are part of the Online Campus concept. Exchange with students takes place in small learning groups, enabling intensive learning even in the virtual space.
What does the degree cost and what financing options are available?
The monthly tuition fee starts at 545 euros; total costs amount to about 13,080 euros for the entire programme. A one-off registration fee of 250 euros is added. The price includes all teaching materials, the use of the Online Campus as well as access to supplementary courses in the areas of personal development, languages, career, business start-up and networking.
Various financing models are available:
- Funding through BAföG (under certain conditions)
- Study loans (e.g. KfW)
- Scholarship programmes of the university and external institutions
- Support from employers within the framework of personnel development
