How much are the fees for online study from outside Germany?

Hello, I'm interested in studying an online Data Science bachelor's programme, but I'm based in South Africa. I'd like to know what the tuition fees are like for international students outside of Germany, especially for fully online programmes at private universities. Do the costs differ depending on my country of residence, or are there fixed prices for everyone? Also, do private German universities offer monthly payment plans or discounts for international students? Any information about hidden fees or extra charges would be great to know so I can plan my finances.

Hi,

for full-online programmes at private universities in Germany, the fees are usually charged in euros and depend mainly on the university, programme and study model – and less on whether you live in Germany or South Africa.

For online Data Science, the clearest current option in our database is:

  • IU International University: Data Science, B.Sc. – online, English, 180 ECTS. In our database, the full-time model is listed at 399 €/month, with total tuition of about 15,063 €. IU also offers longer part-time models with lower monthly payments but higher total costs: currently 344 €/month or 259 €/month, depending on the model.

As a related online tech alternative, you could also look at Tomorrow University: AI & Sustainable Technologies, B.Sc.. It is not a pure Data Science Bachelor, but it is online, available in English or German, and has a strong AI/data focus.

Do fees differ because you are based in South Africa? Usually, for fully online distance-learning programmes, there is no separate price in the way some on-campus universities distinguish EU and non-EU tuition. However, the final amount can still vary because of discounts, scholarships, payment model, exchange rates and bank/payment-provider fees. In case of doubt, ask the university to confirm the exact total price in writing before signing the study contract.

Monthly payment plans are common in distance learning. IU, for example, offers monthly payment models. The lower the monthly rate, the longer the study model usually is – and the total cost can be higher. So compare both numbers: monthly fee and full programme cost.

Possible discounts and funding: Some private universities offer scholarships, promotional discounts or reductions if previous credits are recognised. At IU, recognised prior learning can reduce both study time and tuition fees. Scholarships and discounts are not automatic, so apply or request them before enrolment.

Extra costs to check:

  • whether the quoted total includes the final/graduation fee
  • fees for late payment or contract changes
  • costs for official transcripts or certified documents
  • currency conversion and international transfer fees from your bank or payment provider
  • visa, health insurance and living costs only if you later decide to move to Germany

For a fully online programme from South Africa, your main budget items are therefore tuition in euros plus payment and currency-conversion costs. You normally do not need to budget for German rent, semester ticket or relocation costs unless you plan to study in Germany.
