Details
The Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work at MSB Medical School Berlin is a scientifically based, practice-oriented and systems theory–designed programme, which leads to a first professional qualification after a standard period of study of six semesters, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). The demand for specialists in the field of social work has increased in recent years. Reasons for this include, among others, new social and legal tasks in the areas of child protection, youth social work, parenting support, integration assistance for children and adolescents with mental disabilities, as well as health promotion and rehabilitation of people with chronic or mental illnesses. In addition, inclusion and social space orientation as conceptual guidelines bring changes to infrastructure design.
Due to the interdisciplinary orientation of the department and societal development characterised by change, the Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work (B.A.) focuses on families. However, family does not only refer to the biological family of origin, but also to the creation and design process of a “doing family” and thus includes children, adolescents, adults and older people with their respective coping requirements. Settings that complement or replace the traditional family are also included. This presupposes the inclusive claim of the belonging of every person regardless of gender, religion, origin, etc. Through the interdisciplinary consideration of the life course, students learn social work as well as psychological-pedagogical concepts, theoretical fundamentals and cross-disciplinary competencies that enable them to offer tailored assistance and resource-oriented services for the addressees and to ensure their implementation.
The aim of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work is the academic training of professionals who are taught not only crisis-oriented intervention methods but also holistic preventive perspectives and specialised approaches. This is intended to meet the current societal challenges in working with and for people across their entire lifespan at a high professional level. For this purpose, students are taught not only expert knowledge but also professional attitudes, personal stability and, above all, the ability to reflect. This is especially important insofar as the graduates later influence the strengthening and stabilisation of families and individuals in crisis situations through themselves as reference persons. Therefore, they are already enabled during their studies to assess their own person and their own impact in interaction with others.
The Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work is successfully accredited.
