The degree programme Applied Educational Science (B.A.) is aimed at educational professionals as well as career changers from the social, educational or education-related fields who want to deepen their knowledge and qualify for new areas of activity. The programme is especially suitable if you already have initial work experience in the education or social sector or are seeking a career change into these areas. It also offers a part-time and flexible study option for people who want to pursue academic further education alongside their job and learn the fundamentals as well as current approaches in educational science in a practice-oriented way.

What do you need to provide for admission?

To commence the bachelor’s degree programme, you need one of the following qualifications:

  • General university entrance qualification (Abitur)
  • Subject-specific higher education entrance qualification
  • Advanced technical college entrance qualification
  • Recognised access for professionally qualified persons in accordance with Hessian regulations (for example, through a passed master craftsman examination or a professional qualification with a subsequent aptitude test)

The programme is free of numerus clausus (NC), meaning there is no restricted admission. Admission is also possible without an Abitur if you have the appropriate professional qualification.

In the Bachelor's degree programme Applied Educational Science at Hochschule Fresenius, you will develop a solid understanding of key issues in education and upbringing. Core topics include historical and societal aspects of education and upbringing, basic concepts of educational science, as well as pedagogical psychology. You will engage with media education and media didactics, academic work and research, as well as theories of education, learning, and socialisation. Furthermore, epistemology and theories of science, as well as the analysis of education and socialisation over the life course, are part of the curriculum.

You will gain practical experience in several placement phases, during which you apply your knowledge directly in educational contexts. The curriculum is complemented by modules on pedagogical anthropology, neurobiology, neurodidactics, and national as well as international education systems. Research methodology, educational and social research, as well as didactics, ethics, and quality management in the social sector, are comprehensively covered. In elective modules, you set your own priorities in business and organisational pedagogy, sports pedagogy, or cultural pedagogy.

You develop skills in communication, relationship building, planning and evaluation of educational offers, as well as in didactic design. The conclusion of your studies consists of the Bachelor's thesis and the Bachelor's colloquium.

How is the part-time study programme organised?

The programme is designed as a seven-semester, part-time online degree starting each winter semester. You attend two live online evening sessions weekly and additionally take part in seminars two Saturdays per month. Once per semester, there is also a study week on campus in Wiesbaden, focusing on practical units and networking opportunities. The majority of your studies take place digitally on the Online Campus – allowing you maximum flexibility. Many exams can also be completed online; alternatively, in-person options at nationwide examination centres are available. Internships are a compulsory component of the degree and provide you with early insights into professional life.

The courses are conducted live via Zoom, enabling direct interaction with lecturers and fellow students. Presence phases take place once per semester in Wiesbaden – there you deepen your knowledge through personal contact and can complete practical exercises. Exams are mostly possible online; on request, you can also use six different nationwide examination centres.

The monthly tuition fee is 495 euros, with total costs amounting to 21,040 euros over the standard period of seven semesters. A one-time registration fee of 250 euros is charged additionally. The fees include all teaching materials, digital learning platforms as well as access to additional offers such as language courses, personal development, and career support.
