Guten Tag.

I'd like to study in Germany, but I'm a bit worried about the potential expenses. In this regard, how do private universities compare to public ones for international students? Are there scholarships or any other financial aid, and do they make up for the tuition fees at private unis?

Mit freundlichen Gruss

Hi Gabriel.
In general, as the Servicepoint for Intercultural Competence (SIK) of the Deutsches Studierendenwerk (German National Association for Student Affairs) points out: „As early on as when you apply for a visa and later on for a residence permit you must prove that you have enough financial means to finance your studies in Germany." (https://www.internationale-studierende.de/en/prepare-your-studies/financing)

As for Scholarships you might find something for you in the database of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Servcice):
https://www2.daad.de/deutschland/stipendium/datenbank/en/21148-scholarship-database/

But you're right in your concerns. Even a scholarship might not cover the costs of both, private universities and living. Compared to public universities this might put you at a greater disadvantage when it comes to campus studies.

However, private universities today rarely focus on campus studies alone, some even focus on online/distance learning programmes. So there's a quite large variety in study programmes offered by private vendors in this sector.

So, if distance learning is an option for you, you might want to check the study pogrammes and see how much of a benefit this is getting you compared to campus studies. As to the language of instruction, IU International University of Applied Sciences by far has the highest count of English-language programmes.

Here's a selection of distance learning study programmes with English as language of instruction:
