What are the formal admission requirements for the MLB programme?
To be admitted, you need a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in any subject area. In addition, you must provide proof of at least one year of qualified professional experience. The programme is conducted 100% in English, so fluent English skills are required (usually demonstrated by a recognised English test such as TOEFL or IELTS). The application is open to international applicants with diverse academic backgrounds.
For the programme, you should possess a high level of intercultural competence and openness in dealing with people from all over the world. The Master of Law and Business (MLB) at Bucerius Law School offers you an interdisciplinary curriculum that systematically links legal and economic perspectives. The degree programme is structured along the life cycle of a company and demonstrates how law and business interact from the founding process to later corporate management.
- Core modules: Fundamentals in law and business administration, especially international business law, corporate management, as well as intercultural skills.
- Elective modules (you choose two out of eight): Arbitration, Legal Technology and Operations, Comparative Law in Action, Mergers & Acquisitions, Corporate Governance & Compliance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management (SCM), Law without Walls.
- Practical skills: Case studies, interactive exercises and group projects with international teams promote your communication skills, negotiation competence and understanding of global contexts.
- Research and project work: A master’s thesis and participation in a social project are compulsory.
- English-language teaching: All modules are taught entirely in English; many courses are held jointly with lecturers from the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management.
How is the course structure and organisation of the master’s programme designed?
The MLB is a full-time course with a standard period of study of two years. It combines an intensive on-campus presence in Hamburg with practice-oriented elements.
- Approximately 85% of the programme is completed on the campus of Bucerius Law School, 15% consists of a mandatory two-month internship in an organisation, law firm or company in Germany or abroad.
- The course starts each September.
- The group size is deliberately kept small (around 50 places) to enable personal learning and exchange.
- In addition to the specialist modules, interactive workshops, networking events and an accompanying social project module take place regularly.
- At the end of the programme, each participant submits a master’s thesis.
