The Central State Office for Distance Learning (ZFU) has approved the course Contract Law under the number 1138822. Who this LL.M. suits – and what you need to bring
This programme fits experienced professionals who want to formalise and deepen contract expertise in a flexible, fully online format. Typical profiles include: in-house legal or contract management staff handling commercial agreements across borders; compliance, risk or procurement professionals who draft and negotiate clauses and need stronger legal grounding; international law graduates seeking a German-taught LL.M. in Contract Law to advance into corporate roles. The degree focuses on business practice, not on training for regulated legal professions.
Admission requirements
You apply with a completed undergraduate degree, not with a school-leaving certificate. Foreign qualifications are admitted if they are equivalent and awarded by a state-recognised institution. For the 60 ECTS LL.M., the university lists the following routes:
- A completed first degree in Business Law, Business Administration (with at least 30 ECTS in Law) or any completed legal Bachelor’s degree (LL.B.) totalling 240 ECTS, or a Diplom-Jurist; plus at least 1 year of qualified, relevant work experience obtained after graduation.
- Alternatively: the First State Examination in Law (§ 5 DRiG) plus at least 1 year of qualified work experience.
- Entry with fewer ECTS from the first degree: - With 210 ECTS: either complete 30 ECTS bridging courses, or provide 1 year of qualified work experience. - With 180 ECTS: either complete 30 ECTS bridging courses and provide 1 year of experience, or provide 2 years of qualified work experience.
- Minimum grade: at least “Satisfactory”. If your Bachelor’s grade is 3.5–4.0, admission is possible with additional, matching Master-level credits (≥20 ECTS) or recognised DQR-7/PG Diploma-level qualifications (≥20 ECTS) in a relevant field.
- Language of instruction: German. Non-native speakers must present German at B2 (CEFR). Accepted proofs include TestDaF (TND3, min. 3 in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2, or ÖSD B2. Certificates must generally be issued within the last five years.
Important limitation: an LL.M. does not replace the German First and Second State Examinations and does not qualify you for regulated legal professions (lawyer, judge, prosecutor) in Germany.
Personal requirements
Success in a distance-learning LL.M. depends on strong self-organisation, consistent study time, and solid academic German for dense legal texts and case analysis. Plan a weekly workload of around 20–40 hours depending on your time model (approx. 40 h in 12 months; 25 h in 18 months; 20 h in 24 months). You need disciplined scheduling across time zones, reliable internet for online exams and seminars, and the perseverance to work through jurisprudence, commentaries and tax/regulatory materials. If you enjoy precise writing, structured argumentation and working to deadlines without on-campus routines, the format fits well.
What will you study in the Contract Law (LL.M.) at IU International University of Applied Sciences?
The programme is taught in German. International applicants must present a recognised German certificate at roughly B2 level before starting: TestDaF (min. 3 in each part), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2 or ÖSD B2. You earn 60 ECTS and complete a supervised Master’s thesis.

You strengthen legal research and decision support. You train in legal methodology and academic research and study the legal framework of management decisions, preparing you to advise executives and align legal with business goals.
Electives let you sharpen your profile in one area, e.g. Competition/Antitrust, Insolvency, Stabilisation and Restructuring, Legal Risk and Contract Management, or “AI and Mastering Prompts”.
IU is a private Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences) that is staatlich anerkannt (state-recognised). This distance-learning degree has ZFU approval (No. 1138822). The LL.M. is accredited until 30/11/2030. You finish with a practice-oriented Master’s thesis.
How does studying in the Contract Law (LL.M.) work?
You study 100% online, start any month and choose a full- or part-time pace. Teaching, assessments and student support run via the digital campus, with 24/7 online exams or optional test centre sittings. There is no mandatory on-site attendance.
Teaching language and how to prove it
The teaching language is German. For admission to the German-taught programme, non-German speakers submit one of these certificates: TestDaF (at least 3 in all parts), DSH-1, telc Deutsch B2 or ÖSD B2. The proof is required before you start and typically must be recent (usually not older than five years).
Study model and where you will study from
This is a distance-learning Master designed for flexibility. You can begin “from today” and study from anywhere with internet access. Time models of 12, 18 or 24 months allow you to balance study with work. There is no campus move or residency requirement.

You combine structured self-study with interactive elements on the online campus: digital course materials, live online tutorials and moderated seminars. You get access to academic staff for subject questions and study or career coaching for planning your path through the programme.
How you will be assessed
Expect a mix of online exams (available 24/7), written assignments and case analyses, seminar presentations and the final Master’s thesis with colloquium. This range tests your ability to analyse, argue and apply legal reasoning to business problems.
What does the Contract Law (LL.M.) cost?
Plan with €449 per month or €9,547 in total for the standard programme, paid in instalments from abroad if needed. The distance-learning format means no relocation or mandatory on-site costs; any travel only arises if you choose a physical test centre instead of online exams.
Recognition of prior learning can reduce tuition: previously achieved, relevant credits may be acknowledged and lower your fees proportionally (IU generally applies a per-ECTS reduction when credits are recognised). Core learning resources are provided digitally; some students add optional specialist commentaries at their own expense.
Because you study online, living costs depend on where you reside. If you live in Germany during your studies, budget separately for rent, health insurance and daily expenses based on your chosen city; these are not part of IU’s tuition.
What careers and recognition does the Contract Law (LL.M.) offer?
The LL.M. follows the Bologna system with 60 ECTS and is delivered by a state-recognised university of applied sciences. The programme is accredited until 30/11/2030 and the distance format is ZFU-approved. ECTS credits are the European standard, aiding recognition across the EU and by many international employers and institutions.
Graduates position themselves at the legal–business interface in Germany, the EU and globally. Typical roles include:

- You work in corporate law, compliance, procurement or contract management and want a structured legal upgrade.
- You need a fully online Master with monthly start dates and 24/7 online exams.
- You want to specialise via electives like Competition, Insolvency/Restructuring or Legal Risk & Contract Management.
- You value a state-recognised, accredited LL.M. with 60 ECTS that is portable in Europe.
Some expectations don’t match this format. The following points help you rule it out early and avoid costly misfits.
- You need teaching in English. The programme is entirely in German and requires B2-level certificates (TestDaF, DSH-1, telc B2, ÖSD B2).
- You are aiming for regulated legal professions in Germany (attorney, judge, public prosecutor). This LL.M. does not replace the German State Examinations.
- You want on-campus life with fixed cohorts and face-to-face lectures. This is a distance-learning degree without mandatory presence.
- Your top priority is very low tuition like at German public universities. Private distance programmes charge higher fees in exchange for flexibility and rolling starts.
