- Minimum of 210 ECTS credit points: The 90-CP Master's programme is designed for graduates with 210 ECTS points (standard period of study: 3 semesters).
- The Master's programme is also possible with 180 ECTS credit points – here, the duration of study is 4 semesters (you take an additional acquisition of competences or a practical semester).
- First degree in areas such as product design, fashion design, game design, interior design, communication design, computer science, media informatics, interaction design, or related disciplines with a recognizable reference to design processes or digital technologies.
- The language of instruction is German; sufficient German language skills are required.
- Professional qualification, e.g. a master craftsman's examination, can lead to admission in individual cases (after individual assessment).
In individual cases, proof of missing competences, an aptitude test, or the completion of certain modules may be required.
Personal prerequisites for a successful course of study include:
- Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration at the interface of design, technology, and AI.
- Willingness to independently test and critically reflect on new digital tools and methods.
- Creative, solution-oriented thinking and openness to innovative processes.
- Basic understanding of design methods or digital technologies through the first degree or relevant practical experience.
- Communication and teamwork skills, especially in agile, practice-oriented project settings.
- Self-motivation and perseverance for research- or practice-based work on projects.
- Self-organization for connecting online learning formats and presence phases.
What competencies does the Master's programme in Generative Design & AI impart?
In the Master's programme in Generative Design & AI (M.A.), you will acquire in-depth knowledge and practical methods at the intersection of design, artificial intelligence, and innovative technologies. The key study contents include:
- Foundations and functionalities of generative AI models, including Large Language Models (LLMs), diffusion models, and multi-agent systems
- Practical application of digital tools and platforms for AI-supported design
- Development and evaluation of AI interfaces, visual systems, and prototypes based on functional and ethical criteria
- Critical reflection on the possibilities, limitations, and societal, legal, and ethical aspects of AI in design
- Utilization of agile methods like design sprints, peer reviews, and prototype development
- Project-oriented work in interdisciplinary teams composed of designers, developers, and strategists
- Specialisation choice in the second semester: You can focus individually on "Generative Design: Narrative & Visual Systems" or "Interactive Systems & AI-supported User Experiences"
- Application of current design and technology trends in the context of creative design
- Enhancement of communicative and cooperative skills for actively shaping collaborative processes
You will develop the ability to independently plan, implement, and lead AI-based processes, products, and design experiences. The language of instruction is German.
How is the study programme in Generative Design & AI structured?
The Master's programme is project-oriented and combines a high proportion of online learning with traditional presence phases in Berlin, Hamburg, or Düsseldorf. The standard duration of studies is four semesters (for 180 CP Bachelor's degree) or three semesters (for 210 CP Bachelor's degree).
- 1st Semester: Focus on subject-specific fundamentals, approximately 70% theory and 30% practice
- 2nd Semester: Deepening opportunities through individual specialisations (e.g. design, technology, communication). The emphasis is on about 50% knowledge and 50% practice
- 3rd Semester: Internship (practical semester) or direct entry into the research module, development of a master's thesis with a research- or practice-based focus
- 4th Semester (for 180 CP Bachelor's degree): Completion with your master's thesis and public presentation of the results
The teaching combines approximately 75% virtual live lectures (evenings and Saturdays) with around 25% block presence events (a total of four weeks spread over the first and second semesters). The locations have different focuses (Hamburg: Design, Berlin: Technology, Düsseldorf: Combination). The contents of the presence modules include design & technology, interdisciplinary projects, and practical projects on generative design and prototyping lab.
Accompanying additional offers include language courses, IT workshops, career guidance, and a job portal.
