Admission Requirements

With your double degree in Medical Assistance Surgery and OTA, you can work for example as a Medical Assistant in Surgery, Operations Manager or in medical research and development.

In order to commence the Bachelor's degree in Medical Assistance Surgery (B.Sc.) at Hochschule Fresenius in Stuttgart, applicants must provide proof of the qualification required for the course (university entrance qualification). This is demonstrated by:

  • general university entrance qualification (Abitur), which entitles you to study at all universities and in all federal states,
  • or the subject-specific university entrance qualification, which entitles you to study in the corresponding subject area and in the federal states specified on the certificate,
  • or the university of applied sciences entrance qualification, which entitles you to study at a university of applied sciences or in a consecutive degree programme at a university in the federal states specified on the certificate.

In addition, you need:

  • a training place in Surgical Technical Assistance (OTA) at the Academy of the District Clinics Reutlingen.

Alternatively, you can also be admitted without Abitur or university of applied sciences entrance qualification, provided that the following applies for studying without Abitur:

  • you have passed a master craftsman’s examination.
  • Or you have a qualification according to the regulation on access for professionally qualified persons to universities in the state of Hesse, i.e. either a qualification from a professional advanced training of at least 400 hours, the completion of a technical school or a vocational or administrative academy, or a passed final examination in a state-recognised vocational training occupation with subsequent at least three years of professional experience and passing a separate university entrance examination.
  • For foreign qualifications, equivalence must be proven for admission.

Course Content in the B.Sc. Medical Assistance in Surgery

The Bachelor’s degree programme Medical Assistance in Surgery is aimed at individuals who wish to work in the surgical field and combines practical training with scientific teaching – including a double degree.

The programme is offered alongside employment, so you can study while training. The Akademie der Kreiskliniken Reutlingen coordinates the practical training components, while the theoretical content is taught by Hochschule Fresenius.

The course is designed over a total of 8 semesters, the first six of which mainly serve the practical training in surgical assistance. The curriculum includes the following modules:

  • 1st semester: Basics of academic work, anatomy & pathology – basics, musculoskeletal system, head & neck, biology, chemistry, physics, introduction to studies
  • 2nd semester: Anatomy & pathology – nervous system & internal organs, biochemistry, physiology and pathophysiology I, general pharmacology
  • 3rd semester: Physiology and pathophysiology II, anamnesis & examination, hygiene & microbiology, internal medicine I, communication techniques, patient information
  • 4th semester: Internal medicine II and general medicine, practical phase I: operative or conservative medicine, special pharmacology & toxicology, general, visceral, thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery, operating room theory, laboratory & functional diagnostics
  • 5th semester: Practical phase II: surgery, practical phase III: conservative and operative medicine I, communication & social skills, conservative medicine – minor subjects, documentation, quality management
  • 6th semester: Practical phase V: operative and conservative medicine, practical reflection, medical documentation & health economics, practical phase VI: emergency medicine, anaesthesia & intensive care medicine
  • 7th semester: Scientific methodology, law & ethics, skills lab, clinical medicine, emergency & rescue medicine, anaesthesia & intensive care medicine, practical phase VII: internal medicine
  • 8th semester: Practical phase VIII: emergency medicine, anaesthesia & intensive care medicine II, final examination

In the 6th semester, the state examination for OTA also takes place.

The location of Hochschule Fresenius in Stuttgart offers a vibrant student community, modern infrastructure and close cooperation with regional companies. Stuttgart itself is an important economic hub and offers numerous career opportunities, especially in the fields of automotive, IT and engineering sciences. The city is known for its cultural offerings, including museums, theatres and a diverse nightlife with many bars, clubs and restaurants. The good transport connections also make it easy to explore the surrounding area or commute to and from the Akademie der Kreiskliniken in Reutlingen.

Reutlingen, a city with about 118,000 inhabitants, is located on the edge of the Swabian Jura and offers both a natural environment and proximity to the other large cities Tübingen and Stuttgart. The city itself has a long history, reflected in its charming old town. In addition to cultural and sporting leisure activities, Reutlingen offers a high quality of life due to its location with equally good transport connections to the extensive Stuttgart region, such as a direct train connection to the state capital.

Both cities are only about 40km apart. By train, the route from main station to main station takes about 50 minutes, by car about 40 minutes.
