Admission requirements at a glance

• Completed first degree: A successfully completed undergraduate degree (at least a Bachelor, 180 ECTS or equivalent) at a state-recognised university is required. The subject area is generally not strictly specified; it is emphasised on the website that access is also possible without a background in economics.
• Proof of university entrance qualification: Evidence of a first academic degree. If the degree certificate is not yet available at the time of application, the current certificate can initially be submitted.
• Practical engagement: For the dual study format, simultaneous employment with a suitable practical partner is required. CBS supports the search for appropriate companies if no employment contract is yet in place.
• Selection procedure: There is no numerus clausus (NC) and no waiting periods. Instead, you will complete a personal selection process, focusing on your motivation, potential, and strengths. Usually, this is done via a digital interview, or direct admission is granted in the case of very good grades.
• Application deadline: Applications are possible throughout the year. For dual Master’s programmes, early application is advisable, as the search for a suitable practical partner may take time.

Personal requirements and demands during the course

• Self-responsibility and organisational talent: The combination of work and study requires good time management. Attendance phases take place during block weekends, supplemented by self-study and online teaching. At the same time, submissions and examinations should be manageable within the professional routine.
• Interest in sustainability and change processes: You should be motivated to actively shape future topics and accompany companies on their way to sustainable transformation.
• Willingness to work interdisciplinarily: The programme combines economic, ecological, and social perspectives. Openness to different subject areas and willingness to work in teams are expected.
• Communication and reflection skills: A large part of the coursework is conducted through projects, case studies, and transfer tasks within companies. For this, you need analytical ability, communication skills, and enthusiasm for exchange with practical partners as well as fellow students.
• Good German language skills: The programme is taught in German.

The study contents are modular and combine business management expertise with innovation management and technological competence. From the very first semester, you apply theoretical knowledge directly in your own transfer projects within the company.

Organisational form and course structure

The dual Master’s in Sustainability Management normally lasts four semesters (two years) and concludes with the academic degree Master of Science (a total of 120 ECTS).

• Teaching model: Face-to-face sessions bundled into one weekend per month, plus individual online appointments during the semester
• Teaching format: Combination of on-campus face-to-face teaching and interactive online lectures
• Days of classes: Regularly Thursday to Sunday
• Practical depth: Alternation between theory and practice; company-specific projects are an integral part
• Recommended study workload: In addition to presence blocks, you should allow time for preparation and follow-up as well as for working on projects and exams
• Start of studies: Usually in the winter semester

An exchange semester abroad is not planned during the course of study.

Tuition fees and financing options

• Tuition fees: €0, as fees are usually covered by the practical partner (employing company)
• Financing: In the dual master’s programme, the partner company typically covers the costs. For other study models (full-time, part-time alongside employment) there are individual support options such as BAföG or scholarships.
