Heidelberg is one of Germany's most prestigious university cities, home to around 39,000 students and a university tradition spanning more than 600 years. Beyond the renowned public Heidelberg University, several private universities have established themselves here – led by SRH University with over 30 programmes and Fresenius University of Applied Sciences. Subjects range from business and psychology to health sciences, architecture, and music therapy. Most programmes have no NC restriction (numerus clausus), with tuition starting from €260 per month.

Why study at a private university in Heidelberg?

Heidelberg combines a strong academic infrastructure with a compact, well-connected city. About one quarter of the 163,000 residents are students – shaping everyday life, services, and the local job market. For students at private universities, this translates into tangible advantages.

Specialised private institutions

SRH University is the largest private university in Heidelberg, offering over 30 programmes in engineering, business, health, and creative industries – including several English-taught degrees. The university uses the CORE teaching model (Competence Oriented Research and Education), which replaces traditional lectures with five-week thematic blocks.

Fresenius University of Applied Sciences focuses on business, psychology, and social work at its Heidelberg campus. The offering is complemented by Carl Remigius Medical School (Physician Assistance) and Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies.

Economy and career opportunities

The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region is one of Germany's strongest economic areas. Companies such as Heidelberg Materials (formerly HeidelbergCement), SAP in nearby Walldorf, and Heidelberg University Hospital offer students direct access to internships and working student positions. SRH University cooperates with over 100 partner companies.

Around 39,000 students live in Heidelberg – roughly a quarter of the population

Compact city, short distances

With 163,000 residents, Heidelberg is manageable in size. Most university locations, libraries, and residential areas are within a few kilometres of each other. Trams and buses cover the city, and the semester ticket is valid across the entire Rhine-Neckar transport network – making Mannheim and Ludwigshafen easily accessible. Many students cycle: the city is flat along the Neckar and has well-developed cycling infrastructure.

Quality of life

The historic old town with Heidelberg Castle, the Philosophers' Walk, and the Odenwald forest on the doorstep: Heidelberg offers a high quality of life (index: 206.20, Numbeo). The Untere Straße and old town are the centre of student nightlife – a solid offering for a city this size, though not comparable to Berlin or Cologne.

What does it cost to live in Heidelberg as a student?

Heidelberg is among the more expensive university cities in Germany – the cost of living index stands at 62.2 (Numbeo). Monthly living costs (excluding tuition) range between €900 and €1,200 for students.

Rent and housing

A room in a shared flat (WG) costs between €420 and €520 per month on average. Popular neighbourhoods like Weststadt, Altstadt, and Neuenheim are at the upper end; Rohrbach and Kirchheim are more affordable. A studio apartment in the city centre costs around €1,100, outside the centre about €875.

Semester ticket and transport

The semester ticket costs around €200 per semester (approximately €33/month) and covers the entire Rhine-Neckar transport network. Trams and buses run frequently during the day. Heidelberg is also a strong cycling city – many routes are faster by bike than by public transport.

Daily expenses

Budget around €200–280 for groceries and household items per month. Canteen meals cost between €3 and €5. Leisure and culture add another €80–150. Health insurance is mandatory for students and costs approximately €110 per month.

Sample monthly budget:

  • Rent (shared flat): €480
  • Health insurance: €110
  • Semester ticket: €33
  • Groceries & household: €240
  • Leisure & culture: €120
  • Total: approx. €983 per month (excluding tuition fees)

What are the admission requirements at private universities in Heidelberg?

Private universities in Heidelberg admit students without an NC (numerus clausus) – your school-leaving grade plays little or no role. Instead, institutions use their own selection procedures.

Application and admission

Typical requirements include a letter of motivation, a CV, and a personal interview or online assessment. SRH University also uses a study aptitude test. Application deadlines at private universities are more flexible than at public institutions – many offer multiple start dates per year, and late applications are sometimes possible.

International applicants

If you hold a non-German school-leaving certificate, you will need to verify that it is recognised in Germany (check anabin.kmk.org). For English-taught programmes, TOEFL or IELTS scores are typically required (B2/C1 level). For German-taught programmes, proof of German language proficiency (TestDaF, DSH, or equivalent) is necessary.

Studying without Abitur

You can study at private universities in Heidelberg without an Abitur (German university entrance qualification) – for example, with a completed vocational training and several years of professional experience. Requirements vary by institution and programme.

How can you finance your studies at a private university in Heidelberg?

Tuition fees at private universities in Heidelberg range from €260 to €975 per month, depending on the institution and programme. Total costs over the full duration range from €11,670 to €35,100. Several funding options are available.

BAföG (state financial aid)

You can apply for BAföG at any state-recognised private university – the same conditions apply as at public institutions. The maximum rate is currently €934 per month (as of 2026). Eligibility depends on your income and your parents' income. Half of BAföG is a grant, the other half an interest-free loan.

Scholarships

Both SRH University and Fresenius University award their own scholarships, including merit-based awards and the Deutschlandstipendium (€300/month). External foundations such as the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, and the DAAD also support students at private universities.

Tax deductions

Tuition fees can be deducted as income-related expenses (Werbungskosten, for second degrees and Master's programmes) or special expenses (Sonderausgaben, for first degrees, up to €6,000/year). For working professionals studying part-time, tuition costs can be offset directly against income.

Part-time work

The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region offers a solid job market for students. SAP in Walldorf, Heidelberg University Hospital, and numerous mid-sized companies regularly seek working students. As a working student (Werkstudent), you may work up to 20 hours per week while maintaining your student status.

Frequently asked questions about studying privately in Heidelberg

Both cities are just 20 minutes apart by S-Bahn and complement each other well. Heidelberg is more compact with a stronger campus culture and is home to SRH University. Mannheim offers more nightlife and lower rents. The semester ticket (VRN) covers both cities – some students live in Mannheim and study in Heidelberg.

Most private universities in Heidelberg offer multiple start dates per year – typically in September/October (winter semester) and March/April (summer semester). Applications are often accepted until a few weeks before the start date, as long as places are available. Applying early improves your chances for scholarships and dormitory rooms.

The housing market in Heidelberg is tight. Good options are the Studierendenwerk Heidelberg (dormitory rooms from €270), WG-Gesucht.de for shared flats, and university notice boards. More affordable areas include Rohrbach, Kirchheim, and nearby Eppelheim. SRH University also offers a housing search portal for its students.

Yes. The semester ticket covers the entire Rhine-Neckar transport network (VRN). The S-Bahn connects Heidelberg and Mannheim in 15–20 minutes. Ludwigshafen, Weinheim, and Walldorf (SAP headquarters, popular for working student positions) are also easily accessible. Commuting is common among students in the region.

Not necessarily. SRH University offers several fully English-taught programmes (e.g. International Business Administration, Information Technology, Architecture). For German-taught programmes, you will need a C1-level German certificate (TestDaF, DSH, or equivalent). Some universities offer preparatory German courses.

On-campus part-time programmes are limited in Heidelberg. SRH University offers some programmes with flexible scheduling. For a broader range of part-time options, consider distance-learning programmes with optional in-person sessions in the Rhine-Neckar region.
